Hero tow truck driver honored for freeing kids from fatal bus crash. Hear his story.
Mike Benson learned CPR 20 years ago. The first time he used it was on an unresponsive child at the scene of a horrific school bus crash on I-80 in May 2018, after he and a teacher worked to free 18 students trapped by their seat belts inside the bus. After he saw the bus spin and land on a guardrail and across several lanes of I-80 west, Benson — a tow truck driver who has owned Powder Mill Towing for 38 years — was the first person on the scene of the crash. A student and a teacher on the Paramus school bus were killed and 40 other passengers were injured after the bus and dump truck collided in Mount Olive.
