I Survived a Mass Shooting. Here's My Advice to Other Journalists.
When I became a journalist, I knew I wasn’t signing up to simply write happy human interest features. I knew I would be reporting on death and disaster, and I started preparing myself to handle tragic situations. But it wasn’t until a gunman opened fire in my newsroom on June 28, 2018, that my crash course in trauma began. In the coverage of the mass shooting that left five of my colleagues dead — the deadliest attack on journalists in America — I was able to start healing by feeling heard.
