NABE 2020 Family Institute

from NABE

The National Association for Bilingual Education's (NABE) Family Institute, held during the 49th Annual National Conference, was an evening of cultures, connections, and celebrations. Held in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Tropicana Hotel, the 2020 NABE Family INstitute was a collaboration between NABE and the Clark County School District's (CCSD) Family and Community Engagement Services (FACES) department and the English Language Learner (ELL) Division. Approximately 200 families, including adults and children of all ages, enjoyed an evening honoring bilingualism and biliteracy while learning ways to support a bilingual home and family. Participants were invited from around the District's ten (10) Title I Family Engagement Centers. These centers serve to support parents and caregivers as partners in education and act as a hub for families to access educational opportunities, community resources, and wraparound services. Families who are new to the country were also invited through CCSD's Newcomer Support and Integration Services. Languages represented by the families included English, Spanish, Tagalog, Arabic, Swahili, Farsi, Persian/Dari, and Tigrynia.

The evening featured a keynote speaker, Dr. Washington Collado (Principal, Broward County Public Schools, Florida) who shared his story through his speech, "Life as a Journey to Rising Up: Strong Cultural Values to go from ESOL Student to Principal". Families also received information about the bilingual brain during the presentation provided by Ms. Lizeth Dominguez and Ms. Claudia Molina of the Clark County School District who presented "Supporting a Biliterate Home". The presentation also included networking opportunities for families and valuable strategies to use at home. Presentations were simultaneously interpreted in four languages to provide access for families. Participants were also treated to dinner and a beautiful Mariachi performance under the direction of Mr. Mario Trejo. The evening was made possible through sponsorships from Anthem, Curriculum Associates, Mountain View Hospital, and Silver Summit Health Plan as well as grant funds.
