Timing of gestational diabetes diagnosis by maternal obesity status: Impact on gestational weight gain in a diverse population
from Journal of Women's Health
Early pregnancy diabetes screening, preferably at the initiation of prenatal care, is recommended in high-risk pregnant women (e.g., obesity or prior history of gestational diabetes mellitus [GDM]) to treat unrecognized diabetes in the first trimester before the usual time of GDM screening at 24-28 weeks gestation. GDM is glucose intolerance first recognized in pregnancy that usually resolves after birth, and is associated with adverse maternal and fetal effects.
