Curbing the rate of unnecessary cesarean births is a national health priority because cesarean births contribute significantly to maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality, healthcare costs, and dissatisfaction with care. Despite multidisciplinary efforts to reduce the rate of cesarean birth, the current cesarean birth rate for low‐risk women (25.9%) in the United States remains above the Healthy People 2020 target of 23.9%.
