Progression to type 2 diabetes in women with a known history of gestational diabetes: Systematic review and meta-analysis
from The BMJ
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is glucose intolerance with onset or first diagnosis during the second or third trimester of pregnancy, which is clearly not either pre-existing type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A previous diagnosis of GDM is an established risk factor for developing T2DM in later life, a fact that highlights the importance of postpartum screening to identify those at higher risk of progression and introduce strategies for disease prevention.
