Prenatal exposure to maternal psychological distress and/or alterations in the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis functioning has been linked to the suboptimal emotional, behavioral, and cognitive development of the offspring (Monk et al., 2019; Weinstock, 2008).
