The prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus in pregnancy has almost doubled in the past few decades in the U.S. Of concern, numerous studies show that maternal and fetal complications, such as perinatal mortality and fetal macrosomia, are substantially higher in women with type 1 diabetes than in women from the general population.
