NASW Endorses Community-Based Response Act

Bill Wants Mental and Behavioral Health Professionals – Not Police – Deployed to Certain Emergencies to Prevent Unnecessary Escalation
NASW has endorsed the Community-Based Response Act introduced by U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and U.S. Representative Karen Bass, MSW. The bill would provide grant funding for alternative response to certain 911 calls by deploying social workers and other providers instead of police. “We must re-imagine public safety and enact police reforms in our communities. Social workers and other health providers are frequently the most appropriate first responders for many calls to 911. Social workers have expertise in resolving the problems and crises akin to emergency mental health and social care needs,” said Angelo McClain, PhD, LICSW, CEO of the National Association of Social Workers (Representative Karen Bass, Media Center Press Release, October 1, 2020). more
