Editor's Note

Happy Hanukkah, folks, from my little home where we’ve probably been lighting the menorah while Christmas music plays in the background. I grew up celebrating only Hanukkah, but since I’ve had my own homes, I’ve always celebrated both holidays. Some years that’s eating latkes by the Christmas tree, other years I’ve lit my menorah next to my mother-in-law’s creche. When my daughter was born two years ago, in part to avoid spoiling her with too many presents (ahem, grandparents), my husband and I established a tradition: As a Hanukkah gift each year, we make a charitable donation in her name. As she gets older, she can choose the charity. I adore the sparkle and coziness of Christmastime, but I look forward to teaching my baby about Hanukkah – it’s a story of great persistence and faith, which we could all use, especially now.
Warmly, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly editor more
