MedPAC report recommends site-neutral Medicare payments, SGR repeal
Becker's Hospital Review
In its annual report to Congress, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission has recommended a 3.25 percent payment rate increase for the acute-care hospital outpatient and inpatient payment systems. Under current law, MedPAC projects a statutory payment update of 2.2 percent for fiscal year 2015 — taking into account the expected increase in the hospital operating market basket index, minus an adjustment for the 10-year average productivity growth forecast and a -0.2 percent budgetary adjustment. However, MedPAC members have called for a bigger payment increase because of negative Medicare margins and various payment reduction policies, according to the report.

Rating sites becoming an important tool for patients
By Pamela Lewis Dolan
Despite physicians' dislike of online rating sites, a survey finds patients are increasingly relying on them when shopping for a new doctor. A survey conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan Medical School found that when choosing a doctor, physician rating sites weren't ranked as high as other factors such as word of mouth from family and friends or whether a physician accepts the patient's insurance. But there is evidence the rating sites have become an important tool. And use of them is likely to continue growing.

Providers using bundled payments, quality to entice employers
Bloomberg via Health Data Management
In the changing world of healthcare, patients are finding that the best care may be several hundred miles away. When Travis Bumbaugh needed heart surgery, the Pennsylvania general contractor chose the cheapest option in the Lowe's Cos. health plan. He flew to Cleveland, to one of the top-rated heart hospitals in the nation. By bundling all costs for the surgery under one negotiated price and offering expertise that lowers the odds of complications, the Cleveland Clinicgave Bumbaugh and his employer a better deal than the hospital close to his home. In some cases, hospitals will drop their prices as much as 40 percent to guarantee a steady stream of patients they wouldn't have otherwise.

How important is physician engagement to CPOE adoption?
EHR Intelligence
Computerized physician order entry aims at preventing potential errors or problems associated with orders that could negatively impact a patient's safety or ultimately his health outcome. Each is an important requirement in the EHR Incentive Programs and has grown in importance in the move from Stage 1 to Stage 2 Meaningful Use, which is currently underway for eligible hospitals and professionals. Despite its obvious benefits, healthcare organizations still face resistance with CPOE adoption because of its impact on providers and their workflows.

Doctors testing Google Glass to get real-time patient data
While the general public appears to still be making up its mind about Google Glass and the idea of wearing a face computer, in some fields of work the wearable could be a helpful asset. One such field is medicine. By using Glass, doctors won't have to use their hands to dig through files, search computers, or look up facts on a tablet. With a simple nod of the head or blink of the eye, they could get all of the real-time information they need without having to leave a patient.
