Tight reimbursements meet sophisticated revenue cycle processes
HealthLeaders Media
Like many healthcare leaders, Michael O'Connor, senior vice president and chief financial officer at WellSpan Health, a 572-bed community teaching hospital in York, Pa., sees shifting reimbursement models as a major threat to this organization. "I think the biggest challenge that we face is actually going to take many years to resolve, which is navigating the change from fee-for-service to being paid to care for populations," says O'Connor. Keeping pace with new value-based payment structures designed around population health management requires a comprehensive approach to clinical care with a particular focus on primary care.

Feds release new HIPAA security tool
Government Health IT
Officials at the HHS' Office for Civil Rights have said risk analysis tops the list for where healthcare entities often make their biggest HIPAA misstep. Thus, in efforts to provide further guidance, OCR teamed up with ONC to develop a new security risk assessment tool designed to help practices conduct and document a risk assessment in a methodical, organized way. Healthcare providers can download the application, which can also generate a report that can be passed on to auditors, officials say. As part of the HIPAA privacy and security rules, organizations handling protected health information must regularly review administrative, physical and technical safeguards they have in place to protect the security of the data.

The facility manager's critical role in the success of ACO implementation
Becker's Hospital Review
Healthcare is rapidly changing at every level. While this evolution is obvious in the technologies used to treat patients, it also runs much deeper to affect the business model and even the facilities themselves. Over the last several years, U.S. legislation has created an environment in which healthcare organizations benefit from improved coordination. The result is the formation of accountable care organizations, which are networks of healthcare professionals and facilities that are designed to actively promote better patient care and more intelligent allocation of funds. They key to a successful accountable care organization is coordination.

Efforts to curb hospital readmissions take center stage
Science Codex
Strategies aimed at reducing the number of patients with heart failure and other cardiovascular conditions who find themselves back in the hospital after discharge were identified in six new studies presented at the American College of Cardiology's 63rd Annual Scientific Session. One out of five Medicare patients with heart failure is readmitted to the hospital within just one month of discharge, a fact that is not only bad news for patients who would most likely prefer to avoid another hospital stay, but it also places intense economic pressures on hospitals and the healthcare system as a whole, especially amid new federally imposed reimbursement cuts related to readmissions.

Healthcare spending rose at the fastest pace in 10 years last quarter, a development that could foreshadow higher costs for consumers this year.
