How to get patients to pay their bills
American Medical News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When it comes to asking patients for payment, some medical practice consultants say this should be done much like the old joke about voting in Chicago — early and often. But an effective collection strategy isn't just about asking over and over again. It's about how the asking is done. Timing plus delivery can get the response you want. More

Take action on the Telephone Consumer Protection Act
AAHAM    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As a follow-up to our TCPA position paper at Legislative Day, please send the attached letters to your legislators to encourage them to co-sponsor the critical legislation to modernize the TCPA. AAHAM continues to make advancements in our efforts and we need your assistance. We are pushing for a companion bill to H.R. 3035, which would amend the TCPA to provide parity in the protections and options accorded to landlines and wireless numbers and to allow healthcare providers and their agents to contact consumers at any number provided to them. The TCPA needs to keep pace with the rate at which technology is changing and how it is being used by businesses and consumers. More

FierceHealthcare    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As hospitals face penalties for excess readmissions starting in October, they can predict which patients are most likely to bounce back to their facility by simply picking up the phone, according to a recent CipherHealth study of congestive heart failure patients. Follow-up calls for more than 600 CHF patients discharged from Charleston (W.V.) Area Medical Center identified patients that were 65 percent more likely to be readmitted than the cohort average. Money in a mattress: Why patient records should move to a private cloud
Government Health IT    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While anonymous hackers may strike the most fear regarding health data theft, research and surveys show that old-fashioned larceny, human error and insider misdeeds pose bigger threats. Most patient health information breaches involve mistakes or thefts that originate on the inside of a health enterprise. Yet, healthcare organizations continue to prefer computer systems that are extremely vulnerable to data breaches caused by equipment loss, theft and insider misconduct. More

Plain speaking?
Health Data Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Do patients understand the aftercare instructions generated by your electronic health record, or the educational material you post on your website? If they don't, you're not only running afoul of regulatory demands for good communication, but also imperiling quality of care, which can hurt both patients and the bottom line. More

A joint venture between Aetna and Virginia hospital system Inova introduces a new way that payers, hospitals and physicians can relate to one another as delivery and payment systems continue to shift. Under the deal, Aetna and Inova will sell co-branded health insurance. Hospital bills could go unpaid if states opt out of Medicaid
FierceHealthcare    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If states opt out of Medicaid expansion, hospitals could be stuck with the poorest patients and with no one to foot the bill, according to a Washington Post blog. Since the Supreme Court ruling, states, including South Carolina, Louisiana, Florida, Iowa, Mississippi and Texas, have spoken out, vowing to pass on Medicaid expansion. One of the key provisions under health reform gives states the option to take advantage or forgo expanding the federal state program to people earning less than 133 percent of the poverty line. More
