See disclaimer below. FDA plans to reclassify safety of dental implant Courthouse News Service Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Food and Drug Administration plans to reclassify a blade-form surgically implanted dental device, citing the benefits of such devices relative to their risks. The blade-form endosseous dental implant is a kind of device, made of titanium alloy or other so-called biocompatible material, that is surgically installed into a patient's jaw bone. A denture, crown, bridge or similar dental restoration is attached to the implant by means of a screw extending into the patient's mouth, the proposal states. More
Beta-catenin required in odontoblasts for tooth root formation The Medical News Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The International and American Associations for Dental Research has published a paper titled "Beta-catenin is Required in Odontoblasts for Tooth Root Formation." The paper, written by lead authors Tak-Heun Kim and Cheol-Hyeon Bae, Chonbuk National University Korea School of Dentistry, Laboratory for Craniofacial Biology, is published in the IADR/AADR Journal of Dental Research. The tooth root, together with the surrounding periodontium, maintains the tooth in the jaw. The root develops after the crown forms, a process called morphogenesis. While the molecular and cellular mechanisms of early tooth development and crown morphogenesis have been extensively studied, little is known about the molecular mechanisms controlling tooth root formation. More Lab-on-a-chip detects periodontitis pathogens DrBicuspid.com Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A new mobile diagnostic platform developed by a team of German researchers can be used in a dental office to analyze DNA collected from teeth and identify the 11 most relevant periodontitis pathogens in less than 30 minutes. Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology collaborated with BECIT and ERT-Optik to develop ParoChip, a lab-on-a-chip module designed to allow dentists and medical labs to prepare samples quickly and then analyze the bacteria. All steps in the process — the duplication of DNA sequences and their detection — take place directly on the platform, which consists of a disk-shaped microfluidic card that measures about 6 centimeter in diameter. Accuracy of technology for placing dental implants tested against cadaver measurements DentistryIQ Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Implant dentistry is now a common procedure, but the placement of the implants is crucial. Preoperative planning and positioning are essential steps to avoid complications for the patient, such as damage to the mental nerve. A new study compares the results of technologies for locating and measuring the anterior loop of the mental nerve with actual anatomic measurements on human cadavers. More New methods can help receding gums Florida Today Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If you have a lot of gum tissue around your teeth, you're in great shape. But as we get older, we lose more of that gum tissue and the result is mucosa around the teeth. This is called gum recession. The roots of the tooth that are supposed to be protected by the gum tissue are now exposed. Root sensitivity is one consequence. The more devastating consequence is the erosion of the root surface. You'll feel the erosion as a cupped-out or grooved portion of the root at the gum line. If your fingernail finds a depression in the root, you have erosion. That erosion worsens, producing a weakness in the tooth, just the same as there would be weakness in a tree if you started to chop it down with an ax. If you have a denture that rests solely on mucosa, your chance for denture soreness goes up enormously. More
The skinny on patient compliance DrBicuspid.com Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Monica Spannbauer writes, "In my professional experience, the most frustrating thing for dental professionals always has been patient compliance — or should I say noncompliance. As dental professionals, we often look at noncompliance as a lack of concern or accountability by our patients. After all, one would think that people would want to take responsibility for their personal actions and have a genuine interest in their oral health, right? Amazingly, I've learned that this is not always the case." (May require free registration to view article.) More Mini dental implants are latest innovation The Edwardsville Intelligencer Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In the 24 years that Dr. Richard Boatman has been practicing dentistry many new technologies and techniques have been introduced that have changed dentistry. Just five months ago Boatman founded Gateway Mini Dental Implant Center and began doing mini dental implants which he believes will change the way dentures and dental implants are done. "I was at a dental conference down in Florida last April and one of the topics they talked about was mini dental implants and I was absolutely fascinated by them," Boatman said. More 1st-ever guidelines issued for treating type 2 diabetes in children HealthDay News via U.S. News & World Report Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For the first time ever, the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidelines for the management of type 2 diabetes in children and teenagers ages 10 to 18. Until recently, pediatricians have mostly had to deal with type 1 diabetes, which has a different cause and usually a different management than type 2 diabetes. But, today, due largely to the rise in childhood obesity, as many as one in three children diagnosed with diabetes has type 2. More
New device delivers needle-free injections Yahoo Health Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() An amazing new technology eliminates the painful and scary part of getting shots or injections: the hypodermic needle. A laser-based system propels microscopic jets of drugs through the skin, making the injection as painless as a puff of air, according to a new paper published in the journal Optics Letters. More Periodontal health influences stem cell transplant success medwireNews via The Medical News Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Periodontal infection can increase the risk for developing bacteremia during the neutropenic phase of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, research suggests. Noting that the role of periodontal infection in influencing HSCT outcomes may have been underestimated, Judith Raber-Durlacher (University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands) and team write: "The results of this study point to the importance of an oral evaluation before HSCT as well as interventions before and during HSCT to reduce the microbiological load (e.g., by periodontal treatment and meticulous oral hygiene measures) and thereby reducing gingival inflammation. Fish oil may benefit periodontitis EmpowHER Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The link between periodontitis or inflammation of tissue around the teeth and risk for heart problems can be cause for concern. Dr. Alison Coates, a senior lecturer at the University of South Australia, and researchers from the School of Dentistry at the University of Adelaide in Australia have been studying the possible benefits of fish oil for treatment of periodontitis. At one time, bacteria that caused gingivitis was the main focus for researchers for dental and oral health. More Beyond practice management: The road less traveled DrBicuspid.com Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Perhaps no book in this generation has had a more profound impact on our intellectual and spiritual lives than "The Road Less Traveled," written by M. Scott Peck. Expressed in a way that is timeless in its message of understanding, "The Road Less Traveled" explores the nature of loving relationships and leads us toward peacefulness and fullness of life. It helps us learn how to distinguish dependency from love, how to become a more sensitive parent, and ultimately how to become one's own true self. Recognizing that — as in the famous opening line of his book — "Life is difficult" and that the journey to spiritual growth is a long one, Peck never intimidates his readers, but rather guides them gently through the hard and often painful process of change toward a higher level of self-understanding.
