More than 100 million Americans do not go to the dentist for checkups and cleanings because of the cost, according to PBS FRONTLINE and the Center for Public Integrity. As a result, many go broke trying to afford dental care or suffer from extreme pain. Some die. The next generation of Americans already is suffering. Survey finds dental licensing laws archaic

Sixty-one percent of dentists surveyed do not like the current U.S. dental licensing system and would like to see a universal system of licensure by credentials. Many of the dentist respondents find the U.S. dental licensing laws archaic and restrictive to trade. "I am licensed in four states, and it is truly a nightmare process. The system is broken," a Pennsylvania dentist wrote. Only 20 percent of the dentists like the dental licensing system as it stands, while another 19 percent are somewhat satisfied, but would still like to see changes. More

Americans score badly on oral health

A new survey from the American Dental Association shows that Americans seriously need to clean up their act when it comes to oral health. The ADA's newly launched website,, which aims to improve oral health, reveals that Americans' average score was a D in the survey's range of true-or-false questions, which included questions such as "how often should teeth be cleaned," "what causes cavities" and "how old should a child be for his or her first dentist visit." Psoriasis patients typically experience a decreased quality of life and may have a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease. Is their oral health at risk too? Some recent studies have examined the link between psoriasis and oral health and found a connection. But a new study that included individuals with psoriasis and control subjects has found no difference in the risk of dental caries and periodontal disease between the two groups. North Carolina dentist group, office managers reach agreement

An expensive fight between North Carolina dentists and companies that help manage dental practices reached a truce Wednesday in the session's final days as scaled-back legislation governing their relationships was put on the fast track. The House Health and Human Services Committee agreed to recommend a bill labeled as a compromise by legislators and lobbyists representing both dental service organizations and the North Carolina Dental Society.
