Guys, these 7 quick health checks could save your life
MSNBC    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
"Guy walks into a doctor's office..." That's not the start of a joke — that is the joke. Men don't go to doctors unless they're in serious pain or really spooked about something. In a 2007 American Academy of Family Physicians survey, 58 percent of men cited specific factors, such as lack of time, lack of insurance, and lack of extreme symptoms, as reasons for avoiding physicians. But another 6 percent actually gave the grown-up equivalent of "the dog ate my homework," saying "something else" always prevents them from going. The head-in-the-sand approach isn't much of a health-maintenance strategy. More

Tried-and-true brushing and flossing can help you hold on to your good looks longer
Web MD    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Your mouth is more than just a pretty smile. It's also a gateway to your overall health. Keeping that gateway clean may keep you healthier longer — and looking younger. "Just as white, straight teeth convey youth, a smile with crooked, discolored, worn, or missing teeth is associated with an aged look," says Edmond Hewlett, DDS, professor of restorative dentistry at UCLA's School of Dentistry. "The adage 'long in the tooth,' used to describe older persons, reflects the fact that gum disease causes gums to recede and teeth to appear longer as a result." More

Report: European dental implant prices fall 3.3 percent
Dr. Bicuspid    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Average selling prices of dental implant fixtures and final abutments have decreased 3.3 percent and 8.1 percent, respectively, over the past year, according to a new report from Millennium Research Group. This occurred as dentists attempted to maintain profitability during the economic crisis by demanding greater discounts and increasingly purchasing implants from low-cost manufacturers, MRG said. In many European countries, dental implants are an out-of-pocket expense for patients, with little to no reimbursement from healthcare plans, with the exception of Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, which offer partial reimbursement. Dental implant surgeries are considered elective because the loss of a tooth does not typically inhibit the ability to eat or speak. (May require free registration to view article.) More

Avoiding gaps in your partnership or group practice's operating agreement
Dentistry IQ    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Practicing in a partnership or group practice with one or more dentists has several advantages. In many situations, these practices offer dentists the potential of enjoying more personal freedom and producing higher income with lower overhead. Dentists can also take advantage of sharing management responsibilities, marketing duties, and operational costs. However, because of the potential drawbacks and pitfalls of a group practice, dentists considering this form of practice should enter into a well-crafted, comprehensive agreement to govern the affairs of the "partnership." A University of Alberta dentistry professor has received a $1 million U.S. grant to continue his research into restoring damaged dental roots using ultrasound and stem cells. "When we get to the point that we can stop teeth root degeneration by ultrasound only, that would be great," he said. "If it happens, then we can use the stem cells together with ultrasound to regenerate the degenerated teeth." Dr. Tarek El-Bialy was awarded the three-year grant by the Qatar National Research Foundation and will work with the Queen Dental Centre in Doha, Qatar. More

Global dental implants market growing
International Medical Travel Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dental implants already hold a substantial 18 percent share of the global dental device market, and are also expected to have one of the highest growth rates amongst all dental device submarkets. This is primarily because dental implants offer an effective treatment for edentulism and because of the rising demand for cosmetic dentistry worldwide across all age groups. The global dental implants market is expected to grow from $3.2 billion in 2010 to $4.2 billion in 2015 at an annual rate of 6 percent from 2010 to 2015. Europe currently forms the world's largest market for dental implants with a 42 percent market share, and is also expected to have the highest annual increase, 7 percent, from 2010 to 2015. More
