Shippers, freight forwarders reminded of screening deadline

Supply-chain experts are urging more shippers to prepare for an Aug. 1 deadline mandating security screening of all domestic cargo on passenger jets. Several said during a webcast panel discussion in Washington that bottlenecks are likely once the federal mandate takes effect, although they voiced "cautious optimism" that it won't trigger major or sustained supply-chain disruptions. Small Indiana airport wants better name recognition

A suburban Indianapolis airport hopes to cure an identity crisis in time to attract NFL teams, fans and other out-of-state travelers coming to the city for the 2012 Super Bowl. Mount Comfort Airport wants to change its name to Indianapolis Regional Airport to reflect its proximity to Indianapolis. But efforts to make the change could hinge on how quickly the Federal Aviation Administration would act. Name-change applications typically take 18 months to two years to complete, and the Super Bowl is only 19 months away. More

Delta's Cincinnati network to shrink

Delta Air Lines is cutting more routes at Cincinnati, once a large hub for the carrier. A scheduling update loaded by the carrier on May 22 and subsequently confirmed by Delta, shows Cincinnati service ending Sept. 7 to Albany and Buffalo, N.Y.; Charleston, W.Va.; Des Moines, Iowa, and Little Rock, Ark. Delta operates daily service on the routes. More

Firm plans to restart airport security express service

It has been nearly a year since a new screening service to zip passengers through airport security abruptly shut down, sending 160,000 paying customers back to regular passenger lines. But the defunct screening service is coming back under new ownership, with plans to offer the service at Los Angeles International Airport. The service, called Clear, is expected to start again this summer. More

Guatemala's International Airport restores operations

The International Airport La Aurora in Guatemala City restored its operations at 12:00 p.m. local time (1800 GMT) after five days closing due to the eruption of Pacaya Volcano. Civil Aviation spokeswoman Monica Monge said Pacaya's eruption had covered with ash the roads of the airport, which has 70 flights daily and transports bout 3,000 passengers per day. More

Dream deal for Auckland Airport

Boeing's high-tech Dreamliner aircraft will start flying to New Zealand next year after a deal between Auckland International Airport and Continental Airlines. The 228-seat 787 Dreamliner will start flying non-stop from Houston in the United States to Auckland on November 16, 2011, subject to Government approval. More

ACC meets with OPIC on international projects

ACC President Paula Hochstetler, Belinda Hargrove with TransSolutions, and ACC International Committee Chair Steve Peters with Jacobs met with Dr. Lawrence Spinelli and four of his colleagues from the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) on Thursday, May 27, to exchange information about the missions and interests of the two organizations. OPIC is an agency of the US government with a foreign policy development mission. Independent and financially self-sufficient, it focuses on supporting projects with lasting economic impact in developing nations that benefit US firms through their participation. For more than 30 years, OPIC has assisted firms in projects with significant US equity participation and recent emphasis has shifted toward support of smaller US businesses focused on projects that deal with renewable energy and clean technology. An OPIC representative will attend the ACC International Committee meeting on July 13 and will make a presentation to the ACC Annual Conference in November. Also, look for an upcoming article AirportConsulting magazine with more details of OPIC's mission and opportunities for ACC members. More

FAA announces performance standards for critical NextGen Avionics

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the performance requirements for aircraft tracking equipment that will be required under the Next Generation Air Transportation System, or NextGen. The avionics will allow aircraft to be controlled and monitored with greater precision and accuracy by a satellite-based system called Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B). More
