While there is no precise measure of the magnitude of Medicare fraud, it is known to be a serious problem because it involves individuals who lie to the government and exploit its programs. In July, for example, the Department of Justice charged three individuals in Miami in a $1 billion scheme to bilk Medicare.

From Oct. 4: Electronic health records have been one of healthcare's most innovative or divisive — depending on your point of view — technologies since the start of the modern, technological age. They take up more of doctors' and practice administrators' time, create more technical trials, and may lead to physician burnout, according to a recent report by US News & World Report. Specifically, electronic health records "have helped fuel a national epidemic of burnout among doctors."

From May 17:
A friend had been suffering with abdominal pain for weeks. He tried to work through the issue with his family doctor, but he was referred to a specialist. When he called, he explained his symptoms and was stunned. Not only was the first available appointment six weeks away, but the scheduler was also wholly unsympathetic, even downright surly. My friend explained that six weeks was just too long to wait. The scheduler snapped back, "That's what emergency rooms are for."

From July 19:
The healthcare workplace environment has a deep impact on staff experience, including satisfaction, productivity and institutional loyalty. From Aug. 30:
The numbers don't lie. Cases of opioid addiction and overdoses have been on the upward bound in the last decade. Just as alarming, more than half of practicing physicians today display signs of burnout, and those rates don't look to be declining anytime soon. Critics think the reason for the rise in both issues stems from the lack of education in today's medical schools around treating pain in patients and physician well-being. Medical schools are now meeting these issues head on.

From March 1:
Medical personnel know attitude, tone and body language are key to patient satisfaction. I recently had the pleasure of visiting a practice where the atmosphere was great, but one thing killed the experience: document errors. After receiving one of their forms, I immediately noticed that HIPAA was spelled incorrectly as "HIPPA," which automatically made me think HIPPA-potomus. Although it was funny at the moment, I began to question the professionalism of this practice.

From Jan. 26:
The technological revolution continues to foster advances in medicine at an increasingly rapid rate. In diabetes treatment, monitoring and care, state-of-the-art "gadgets" have made the management of this disease easier and allowed and encouraged more compliance on the part of the patients. Let's take a look at three new devices on the market. First up is the Noctura 400, a breakthrough device that intervenes in the complex process that causes diabetic retinopathy.
