Call for abstracts deadline July 1 - for oral presentation at ACFAOM 2011, Oct. 27-30, Disney World

The deadline for receipt of abstracts for oral presentation at ACFAOM's Annual Clinical Conference, Total Immersion: Medical, Biomechanical and Wound Care of the Lower Extremities, is July 1. All abstracts selected for presentation on Sunday, Oct. 30, will be published in The Foot, ACFAOM's official journal, which has an international readership. ACFAOM 2011 will be a comprehensive learning experience for physicians looking to enhance clinical skills in the areas of Biomechanics, Wound Care, Medicine and Dermatology, while improving the bottom line of their practices. This year's meeting offers a full spectrum of 6-hour tracks fundamental to the practice of podiatric medicine with focused clinical lectures and "hands-on" workshops. Forefoot plantar pressures respond to rocker bottom diabetic footwear

A Mayo Clinic study confirms previously reported offloading effects of a rocker bottom shoe design in patients with diabetic neuropathy and suggests that a plastazote insole may increase that benefit. Researchers analyzed dynamic plantar pressures in 15 subjects with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and a history of forefoot ulceration. A stiff soled shoe with a rocker sole modification was compared to a flat stiff soled shoe; both types of footwear were tested with and without a 1.25 cm plastazote insert. More

Dr. Russell Volpe, for Podiatry Today, writes, "As someone who teaches and writes a great deal about biomechanics, orthopedic and pediatric podiatric medicine, I often discuss equinus influences as among the most destructive on the foot in gait. This critical sagittal plane pathology can occur at any age and comes in congenital and acquired forms. As bipedal locomotion is essentially a sagittal plane event as we move the body forward on a horizontal surface, limitations in sagittal plane motion can lead to destructive compensations that ultimately precipitate pathology." More

Short-term study shows better results with PRP vs. cortisone for plantar fasciitis

According to a presentation here, an injection of platelet-rich plasma resulted in better foot and ankle scores than cortisone in patients with severe chronic plantar fasciitis. "I decided to apply the use of platelets and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) technology in this type of refractory case," Raymond R. Monto, M.D., said at the 12th EFORT Congress 2011. "How does it work? We are probably seeing modulation at least of angiogenesis of collagen turnover and some tissue healing." More

Derma Sciences foot-wound drug shows promise

Ryan D. Whitaker carries two sets of business cards. One has contact information for his downtown Vancouver, Canada, law office. The other introduces him not as an attorney but as a proud barefoot runner. Whitaker had the second batch of cards made because so many people stop him on runs and ask where his shoes are. TGF-β1 serum concentrations are considered to be one of the most promising markers of fracture healing. Previously, we demonstrated significant differences in the post-traumatic time courses of patients with timely and delayed fracture healing. The aim of this study was to evaluate possible differences in the serum concentrations of TGF-β1 in cigarette-smoking vs. non-smoking patients with timely and delayed fracture healing in order to understand pathophysiological pathways through which smoking impairs fracture healing. More
