Little is known about the long-term results of surgical correction of hallux valgus deformity, in particular, the recurrence rate and factors leading to recurrence.
Of 108 patients who underwent a Scarf osteotomy, 93 patients were examined at an average duration of follow-up of 124 months. Clinical examination before surgery and at the time of final follow-up included an evaluation of range of motion, pain as measured with a visual analog scale, and American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society scores. The Foot and Ankle Outcome Score was also assessed postoperatively. Radiographic data were evaluated preoperatively, at six weeks postoperatively, and at the time of final follow-up. Additional radiographic data were available for seventy-nine patients of the same patient cohort at an average of 27 months postoperatively.

Recent data indicate that nearly half of the U.S. adult population has diabetes or prediabetes, with prevalence of diabetes estimated at 12 percent to 14 percent and prediabetes estimated at 37 percent to 38 percent in 2011 to 2012, according to recent study findings published in JAMA.
"The recent prevalence and trends in diabetes can be estimated using U.S. survey data with information on a previous diabetes diagnosis and measured glucose levels," the researchers wrote.

Open ankle fractures account for approximately 1.5 percent of all ankle fractures and they are associated with soft tissue damage, an increased risk of infection, and possible vascular compromise. The management of these fractures has drastically improved over the past century, leading to a decrease in amputations as well as mortality. This is due to the advancements in antimicrobial therapy as well as improved surgical techniques. Although outcomes have improved, there is still debate regarding multiple aspects in the overall care of these complex and challenging ankle fractures.

diabetic foot ulcers. One year
later, Dermagraft was also approved,
signaling the start of a new approach
for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.
Both of these products contain
living cells, which have been prepared
for application to the wound
of a recipient. Apligraf contains both
human keratinocytes and fibroblasts
attached to a bovine collagen matrix,
while Dermagraft contains human
fibroblasts attached to an absorbable
polyglactin absorbable mesh substrate.
Aside from a few more uncommon
biologic products, living cell
therapy was previously only available
through the use of a split thickness
or full thickness autograft.

An increase in fat mass index, but not body mass index, was associated with both prevalent and future foot pain, a large community-based study showed.
Among a subset of participants, ages 50 and up, from the North West Adelaide Health Study, foot pain was present in 20.2 percent of the cohort between 2004 and 2006 (stage 2) while 36.4 percent of the same group had foot pain between 2008 and 2010 (stage 3) of the study.
