Little is known about the long-term results of surgical correction of hallux valgus deformity, in particular, the recurrence rate and factors leading to recurrence.
Of 108 patients who underwent a Scarf osteotomy, 93 patients were examined at an average duration of follow-up of 124 months. Clinical examination before surgery and at the time of final follow-up included an evaluation of range of motion, pain as measured with a visual analog scale, and American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society scores. The Foot and Ankle Outcome Score was also assessed postoperatively. Radiographic data were evaluated preoperatively, at six weeks postoperatively, and at the time of final follow-up. Additional radiographic data were available for seventy-nine patients of the same patient cohort at an average of 27 months postoperatively.

Recent data indicate that nearly half of the U.S. adult population has diabetes or prediabetes, with prevalence of diabetes estimated at 12 percent to 14 percent and prediabetes estimated at 37 percent to 38 percent in 2011 to 2012, according to recent study findings published in JAMA.
"The recent prevalence and trends in diabetes can be estimated using U.S. survey data with information on a previous diabetes diagnosis and measured glucose levels," the researchers wrote.

Open ankle fractures account for approximately 1.5 percent of all ankle fractures and they are associated with soft tissue damage, an increased risk of infection, and possible vascular compromise. The management of these fractures has drastically improved over the past century, leading to a decrease in amputations as well as mortality. This is due to the advancements in antimicrobial therapy as well as improved surgical techniques. Although outcomes have improved, there is still debate regarding multiple aspects in the overall care of these complex and challenging ankle fractures.

In the year 2000, Apligraf was
cleared by the FDA for use on
diabetic foot ulcers. One year
later, Dermagraft was also approved,
signaling the start of a new approach
for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.
Both of these products contain
living cells, which have been prepared
for application to the wound
of a recipient. Apligraf contains both
human keratinocytes and fibroblasts
attached to a bovine collagen matrix,
while Dermagraft contains human
fibroblasts attached to an absorbable
polyglactin absorbable mesh substrate.
Aside from a few more uncommon
biologic products, living cell
therapy was previously only available
through the use of a split thickness
or full thickness autograft.

An increase in fat mass index, but not body mass index, was associated with both prevalent and future foot pain, a large community-based study showed.
Among a subset of participants, ages 50 and up, from the North West Adelaide Health Study, foot pain was present in 20.2 percent of the cohort between 2004 and 2006 (stage 2) while 36.4 percent of the same group had foot pain between 2008 and 2010 (stage 3) of the study.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, people in the U.S. log approximately 75,000 miles on their feet by age 50 years,1 making foot pain a common complaint heard in healthcare clinics across the nation.
"Abnormalities in gait, ill-fitting shoes, repetitive motion, and trauma can all result in foot pain," said Andrew Rader, DPM, founder of Indiana Foot & Ankle in Newburgh. "One common cause is neuralgia in the intermetatarsal region of the forefoot, known as Morton's neuroma."

Social media is a relatively
new concept, which is to
say, it has probably been
around for about a decade.
Although you could argue
that AOL was the inventor of chat
rooms, most people probably credit
Myspace with being the first real
"social media" as the concept is used
today. Myspace was founded in 2003.
Today, social media has many
platforms, with the dominant platforms
currently being Facebook and
Twitter. For the sake of this article,
social media will be defined as Internet-based
platforms that allow individuals
to create, share or exchange
information in virtual communities
and/or networks. This is certainly
not comprehensive, but it will briefly
describe the most dominant social
media platforms.

Physician's Practice
If you've been preparing for implementation of the new ICD-10 coding system (You have been, right? Of course you have.) then you know that the new codes are very different from the ICD-9 codes. It's not just a matter of a new numbering system. It is, as CMS puts it, "a leap in how we define care."
If getting ready to take that leap has been driving you batty, you can take heart in knowing that the changes will ultimately benefit you as a physician, not only in helping you provide better documentation, but in getting paid for what you do.
