ACPA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It has been a few months since I last communicated with you but rest assured there have been many major issues facing the broader society with implications for our profession and higher/tertiary education around the globe: Newtown, Conn., elementary school shootings and what that says about our readiness on college campuses; Hurricane Sandy and the emergency response efforts of our campuses and communities; political climate on U.S. campuses following the re-election of the first African American president and implications of racism; and the fiscal cliff and the implications for higher education and the unfortunate image from some that U.S. higher education costs are out of control. NPR    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As college students return to class from winter break, campuses around the nation are bracing for the possibility of a flu outbreak. Colleges in Boston are especially worried after the mayor's declaration of a public health emergency in the city. The city's student population is large — around 150,000. And though 20-year-olds might not seem like as vulnerable as the elderly or babies, dorm life doesn't make it easy to avoid a highly transmissible disease. More

Colleges Spend Much More Money On Athletes than on Students, Because Athletes Are Heroes
Gawker    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In case any unimportant "regular" college students were operating under the delusion that your university's boilerplate about how "Academics Come First" was actually a meaningful statement of values, it is now possible to quantify financially just how much more important athletes are than you, the unathletic plebeian. A new report from the Delta Cost Project finds that NCAA schools (particularly big football schools) shower each athlete with far more dollars than each student, even though "only one in four institutions in the FBS generated more money than it spent in any given year between 2005 and 2010." HealthDay News via U.S. News & World Report    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new study offers up a cautionary tale for parents: College students who are well-funded by Mom and Dad actually get worse grades than students who aren't so fortunate. On the other hand, students who received financial support from their parents were more likely to complete college and earn a degree than students without such resources, according to the study, which was published in the journal American Sociological Review. Where Students Can Find Part-Time Jobs
FOXBusiness    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Being a full time college student is a full-time job in itself, but many students take on part-time jobs to help cover tuition or get experience to bolster their resumes. According to market research and educational consulting firm Maguire Associates, 79 percent of students worked part time while in college in 2011, up from 78 percent in 2010. Experts recommend that students look for jobs that will help their future career path and provide them real-world work experience. More
