Share Of College Graduates In US Hits New High

In an encouraging sign for the American economy, the share of the U.S. adult population with at least a bachelor's degree kept growing last year, surpassing 30 percent for the first time ever. The Census Bureau, in releasing new data on education and earnings, called it an important "milestone" in American history. As recently as 1998, fewer than one-fourth of people ages 25 and older had completed four years of college or more, the bureau said. More

Oregon State Board Of Higher Education Expected To Ban Guns On Campus — Again

Since a September court decision, students and faculty with concealed weapons permits can legally pack guns on Oregon's seven university campuses, but that soon may end. The State Board of Higher Education will consider a policy that would require people to agree not to carry guns if they want to do any business on university property, whether as a student, professor, employee, contractor, vendor, sports fan or visitor to any university event. Last year, 18 states introduced laws to allow people to carry concealed weapons on campus, reports the National Conference of State Legislatures. More

CAS to Suspend Book Sales Effective April 15

CAS will suspend all sales of its current publications effective April 15, and immediately will start taking orders for its new publications to be released Aug. 1. In the interim, the seventh edition of the CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education will be replaced with the eighth edition. Click here.

President Barack Obama, addressing the members of the National Governors Association on Monday, reiterated his views that higher education increasingly is important for individual Americans and for the country's economic future, and that rising prices threaten to put a postsecondary education out of reach for many. But while his speeches to campus leaders have focused on colleges' responsibility to contain their own costs and the prices they charge students, he used his appearance before the governors to reiterate his belief that states share significant culpability for driving up tuition prices. Join the Committee for Multicultural Affairs: Social and Fundraiser this year at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Ky. ACPA will honor Muhammad Ali with the 2012 Humanitarian Award. A ticket sale gains each recipient one-time entry into the museum and renders a donation to CMA's CultureFest. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here.
