Why Student Debit Cards Are Wolves In Sheep's Clothing
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A report on campus debit cards is raising eyebrows in higher education. "Campus debit cards are wolves in sheep's clothing," said Rich Williams, U.S. PIRG Higher Education Advocate and co-author of the report, "The Campus Debit Card Trap," recently released by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund. "Students think they can access their dollars freely, but instead their aid is being eaten up in fees." The report finds that banks and financial firms now control or influence federal financial aid disbursement to more than 9 million students by linking checking accounts and prepaid debit cards to student IDs. A measure urging a ban on tobacco on Ohio's public college campuses will be presented to the state's higher education board, the board chairman said. Ohio Board of Regents Chairman James Tuschman plans to introduce the resolution at a regents meeting this month, The Plain Dealer reported. "It's the right thing to do," Tuschman said. The number of smoke-free college campuses across the nation has grown from a handful to around 700 since Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights in Berkeley, Calif., began tracking information a decade ago, said Bronson Frick, that organization's associate director. Arkansas, Iowa and Oklahoma have banned smoking on all state college campuses. More

The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Certificates, not degrees, are the future of higher education, a Georgetown researcher contends in a new study. Certificates are a relatively new and increasingly popular postsecondary credential, awarded typically by a community college or for-profit college for training in a particular occupation. Most certificates take less than a year to complete, although some "long-term" certificate programs can take as long as four years. Since 1980, certificates have grown from 6 percent to 22 percent of all postsecondary awards, making them the fastest-growing credential, according to a new report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce.
