Active Voice: Exercise Testing – A Window into Cardiovascular Health During Pregnancy
By: Victoria L. Meah, Ph.D. |
 |
|
Pregnancy results in profound adaptation of a female’s cardiovascular system. It is well established that resting heart rate and cardiac output progressively increase over the course of pregnancy. These changes enable the cardiovascular system to meet the demands of the developing baby but, at rest, a mother’s heart has a greater workload compared with pre-pregnancy.
Historically, there was a hypothetical concern that exercise during pregnancy may overload a mother’s heart. It was suggested that the additional metabolic demand of activity during pregnancy would result in reduced blood flow to the developing fetus. This remains unsubstantiated, and many empirical studies have shown that blood flow to the fetus is maintained during prenatal exercise in healthy individuals. However, far less is known about how a mother’s heart responds to exercise.

Celebrate Exercise is Medicine® Month
|
|
|
Each May, the ACSM family unites to celebrate Exercise is Medicine® Month and advocate to make physical activity assessment and promotion a standard in clinical care. Faculty, scientists, health care providers, fitness professionals, students and even community leaders, mayors, governors, Congress and the president have proclaimed May as EIM Month since 2010. Now, more than ever, as the world continues to deal with the lasting effects of COVID-19, we must continue to promote the importance of staying active to maintain our health.
“Integrating physical activity into our daily routines can protect our health, boost our immune systems, lower anxiety and help us maintain our sanity!” said Robyn Stuhr, M.A., ACSM-CEP®, ACSM-RCEP®, vice president of Exercise is Medicine. “During EIM Month, let’s all renew our commitment to promoting active lifestyles within our spheres of influence.”
Here are a few ways you can participate in EIM Month:
- Clinicians can share the EIM Rx for Health handouts with patients. The handouts highlight benefits, tips and precautions related to physical activity.
- Join the EIM Research Learning Collaborative to help expand the evidence base of best practices for making physical activity assessment and promotion a standard in clinical care.
- Follow EIM on Twitter and Facebook. Like, share and comment on EIM updates to expand awareness of the initiative and invite your network to get involved.
- Sign up to receive monthly updates, including new research and resources.
You can find additional resources and ways to celebrate Exercise is Medicine Month online.

Mentors Still Needed: Help Pave the Way for Future Female Fellows
|
|
|
ACSM seeks current fellows to volunteer as mentors through the Mentoring Women to Fellowship program. The program pairs fellows and female members to expand engagement in professional presentations, publications and leadership, with the goal to help more females achieve ACSM fellow status. Fellows and protégés are matched based on professional interest and regional location. Pairs then work together to assess fellow readiness, identify ways to attain needed service points and to submit the fellow application. This new infographic details the program pathways and recommended activities.
Don’t miss this chance to coach the future trailblazers of ACSM and the sports medicine and exercise science fields.

The May/June 2021 issue of ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal® is now available and features these two articles free-of-charge on the journal’s web site until June 21:
- Exercise is a Life-Changer for Those with Autism by David S. Geslak, B.S., ACSM-CEP, CSCS, and Benjamin D. Boudreaux, M.S. Fitness professionals share a common goal of using exercise to help people improve lives. Unfortunately, one group that stands to gain significant benefits from exercise is regularly left out — the autism community. In this feature, Ben Boudreaux, a Ph.D. student, shares the journey of his struggles with autism, including how exercise went from being a source of frustration and failure to the gateway for improved confidence and success. David Geslak has seen firsthand that most of his clients on the autism spectrum share similar experiences with Ben. David has spent more than 15 years developing and fine-tuning exercise protocols to effectively bring exercise to the autism community. Ben and David seek to empower fitness professionals to have a life-changing effect on individuals with autism and their families through exercise training and physical activity.
- Weight Bias and Discrimination in the Workplace: Addressing a Diversity and Inclusion Issue by Nico Pronk, Ph.D., M.A., FACSM, FAWHP. Employees with obesity commonly face weight bias, stigma and discrimination at their workplace. Such experiences directly affect their health and well-being, performance at work and future opportunities. In the workplace, weight bias, stigma and discrimination should be considered under the umbrella of diversity and inclusion initiatives—although this seldom occurs. It should be recognized by organizational leadership that body weight (i.e., obesity) is a part of a person’s identity that may contribute to experienced inequities just as much as other aspects of identity, like age, race, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), national origin, political affiliation, sexual orientation, marital status or disability.
2021 commemorates ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal's 25th year of publication. The journal is written to fulfill the information needs of fitness instructors, personal trainers, exercise leaders, program managers and other frontline health and fitness professionals. ACSM Alliance members receive a subscription to this journal as a member benefit. Professional members can add an annual subscription for just $32.
