The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACS CoC) established an Advocacy Committee in 2013, which is responsible for identifying, evaluating and recommending positions on legislative and/or regulatory issues that come before the state and/or federal government and that have the potential to affect CoC-accredited cancer programs and cancer patients. The ACS CoC Advocacy Committee meets annually to establish a list of priorities and conducts regular conference calls to discuss ongoing developments.

In the article, "An Unexpected Turn: My Life as a Cancer Advocate," Couric shares the experience of losing her husband, the lawyer and TV commentator Jay Monahan, at age 42 to colorectal cancer in 1998. Couric's piece describes the start of her commitment to cancer advocacy while at the "Today Show" and outlines the trajectory of her work to become a notable champion in the fight against cancer.

The NCI recently unveiled members of a blue ribbon panel created to help implement the national cancer "moonshot" initiative. The panel — comprised of clinical and pharmaceutical industry leaders, patient advocates and experts in fields such as immunology, diagnostics and genomics — will serve as a working group of the presidentially appointed National Cancer Advisory Board and offer guidance and insights that can help shape the scientific direction of the moonshot initiative.

Researchers at the University of Toronto have discovered a novel function performed by the breast cancer 1 protein (BRCA1), which regulates DNA repair. Well known for the role it plays in breast and ovarian cancer, this study revealed that the BRCA1 protein actually plays a much broader biological role, particularly in protecting the developing embryo from the damaging effects of reactive oxygen species.

In 2015, the FDA approvals of Cyramza (ramucirumab) and Lonsurf (TAS-102) led to updates to the NCCN treatment guidelines for colorectal cancer (CRC).
Although these new agents have shown great promise, Alan P. Venook, MD, cautions against ignoring established therapies, such as Adrucil (5-fluorouracil).
At the 2016 NCCN Annual Meeting, Venook delivered a presentation on treatment strategies in metastatic CRC and recent changes to the guidelines.

New research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology has found New Zealand has 50 cases of melanoma per 100,000 people, compared with Australia's 48.

Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) who survived more than 10 years demonstrated increased risk for other cancers regardless of treatment receipt, according to results of a study conducted at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The most common other cancers in survivors were nonmelanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, melanoma, lung cancer and gastrointestinal cancer.
