Mortality rates from liver cancer in the United States have doubled since the mid-1980s, and they are increasing faster than for any other cancer, according to a new analysis by the American Cancer Society.
The study was published online June 7 in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
From 2009 to 2013, the average incidence of liver cancer per year was 7.7 per 100,000. The average annual death rate from liver cancer for those years was 6.3 per 100,000.

For young women with a history of breast cancer, there's at least one thing about which they might stop worrying. In general, pregnancy does not increase the risk of cancer recurrence. That's the main finding of the largest trial to date on this subject. Leaders of the American Society of Clinical Oncology featured this result at the society's annual meeting in Chicago.

Increasing evidence has demonstrated the adverse biological effects of stress on tumor progression, but the association between psychosocial stress and cancer risk is less clear.

A University of Oklahoma and Mercy Hospital research team is set to begin the largest breast cancer clinical trial ever performed in Oklahoma.
The team has developed new breast cancer risk prediction models to identify patients who might have cancers that are not visible on mammograms.
The team has reviewed 2,000 imaging studies performed at Mercy over the past two years and has refined the image analysis system.
The clinical trial begins July 1 at the Mercy Breast Center.

Researchers have long known that diabetes can increase a woman's risk of breast cancer. A new study, however, suggests that this risk could be significantly reduced with long-term use of low-dose aspirin. Diabetes is estimated to affect more than 29.1 million people in the United States, or 9.3 percent of the population.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form, arising when the body can no longer use the hormone insulin effectively, which can lead to high blood sugar levels.

The 2017 Cancer Programs Conference: Creating a Culture of Quality is the only conference developed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), Commission on Cancer (CoC), American College of Surgeons Clinical Research Program (ACS CRP), National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) and National Cancer Database (NCDB). Attend and be able to:
- Identify current issues impacting cancer providers’ ability to provide cancer patients and those with diseases of the breast high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Explain the importance of staff involvement in the collection and review of patient demographics and data for community outreach, prevention and screening, quality improvement, and program administration.
- Describe best practices and evaluate the appropriateness for implementation at individual programs/centers.
- Develop and utilize quality tools and benchmarks to monitor and continually evaluate their program’s performance.
