Neuroblastoma survivors are at elevated risk for psychological impairment, according to a study published online June 11 in Cancer.
Daniel J. Zheng, MD, from Yale University in New Haven, Conn., and colleagues evaluated the long-term psychological and educational outcomes of 859 survivors of neuroblastoma (≥5-year survivors of neuroblastoma younger than 18 years) and 872 siblings of childhood cancer survivors (younger than 18 years). Over a median follow-up of 13.3 years, the researchers found that neuroblastoma survivors had an increased prevalence of impairment in the domains of anxiety/depression, headstrong behavior, attention deficits, peer conflict/social withdrawal and antisocial behavior, compared to siblings.

A new anticancer agent developed by the University of Warwick has been studied using microfocus synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) at I18 at Diamond Light Source. As described in the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, researchers saw that the drug penetrated ovarian cancer cell spheroids and the distribution of zinc and calcium was perturbed. Platinum-based chemotherapy agents are used to treat many cancer patients, but some can develop resistance to them. To address this issue, scientists from the University of Warwick sought to employ alternative precious metals.

Most patients with myelofibrosis, a rare chronic disorder of the haematopoietic cells of the bone marrow, benefit from drugs from the JAK2 inhibitor class: symptoms are relieved, survival extended and general quality-of-life enhanced. However, two or three years after the start of treatment, some patients develop an aggressive B-cell lymphoma. In a close collaboration between researchers from MedUni Vienna and Vetmeduni Vienna, it has now been shown for the first time that JAK2 inhibitors awaken "dormant" lymphomas in the bone marrow and hence cancer.

Researchers have developed a computer program, which has revealed a previously unknown combination of drugs that may be the answer to Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), using genetic and treatment data from TNBC cells grown in labs and from hundreds of patients world-wide. Importantly, researchers can tell by inputting patients' genomic and proteomic information into their computer model who may benefit from this drug combination or not — saving precious time.

A six-year research project identifies 63 gene changes that could help to indicate an increased risk of prostate cancer in certain men. The study was conducted at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH, and the results are now published Nature Genetics.
Cancer epidemiology researcher Frederick R. Schumacher, PhD, led an international team comprising over 100 researchers. These genetic markers might make it easier to determine the necessity, as well as the rate, of regular prostate cancer screenings.

Scientists have found that blocking certain proteins that respond to the hormone progesterone may prevent breast cancer in those who carry high-risk genes. The proteins are called epigenetic proteins and they cause "mammary gland stem cell" numbers to expand when exposed to progesterone.
