Vice President Biden will convene a daylong cancer summit in Washington on June 29 that will be part pep rally, part Ted talk, part wonk-a-thon — all designed to garner support for the Obama administration's yearlong initiative to advance cancer research.
The summit, which is expected to draw as many as 300 people from academia, industry and advocacy groups to Howard University, is billed as a way to generate new ideas to beat a disease that kills almost 600,000 Americans a year.

In a study of older women with newly diagnosed stage I to III breast cancer, approximately one in five lost the ability to complete some of the basic tasks necessary for independent living within one year of initiating treatment. The study also found that a simple survey can help identify which women are at risk of such functional decline. The findings are published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society.

The AJCC announces five disease site webinars that are scheduled for summer and early fall this year. The webinars, provided at no cost, will provide highlights of the five most common site chapters for AJCC 7th edition staging and include: Melanoma, Lung, Breast, Colorectum and Prostate. There will be pre- and post-education quizzes to serve as a self-assessment for the information learned. The webinars will provide information on the uniqueness, differences, exceptions or special concerns for the disease sites.

Fewer than half of ovarian cancer patients survive more than five years after their diagnosis. But new research indicates that preemptive surgery to remove a woman's ovaries and fallopian tubes might benefit more women than previously thought.
According to a recent study by Queen Mary University London scientists, for women age 40 or older with a lifetime risk level of 4 percent or greater, this operation, in combination with hormone replacement therapy, would provide 43 extra days of life expectancy on average.

The American College of Surgeons is seeking eight Fellows to fill vacancies on the Commission on Cancer (CoC). The initial term of appointment is three years with eligibility for reelection to a second term. Members may hold office or serve as vice-chair of a committee or subcommittee during their second term. New members will be recommended by the Nominating Committee, selected in October by the Executive Committee, and then brought before the full CoC membership for approval at the CoC's Annual Meeting. The ACS Board of Regents will confirm the final list of new members, and the CoC will announce the new members in late October.

New York state is expanding access to breast-cancer screening by requiring hospitals to extend hours for mammograms and eliminating insurance costs.
Under the new law, which Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed recently, more than 200 hospitals around the state will be required to offer evening and weekend hours for mammograms. Insurance companies will be prohibited from charging deductibles or copays for the procedure.
