The U.S. population is growing increasingly diverse, yet that racial and ethnic diversity is not reflected among health care providers.
The gap is particularly pronounced in oncology.
ASCO released a strategic plan designed to promote the development of a culturally competent oncology workforce that is equipped to care for the diverse population of patients with cancer.

Paul Davies knows what’s wrong with cancer research: Too much cash and too little forethought. Despite billions of dollars invested in fighting this disease, it has remained an inscrutable foe. “There is this assumption that you can solve the problem by throwing money at it,” he says, “that you can spend your way to a solution.” Davies, a theoretical physicist at Arizona State University — and therefore somewhat of an interloper in the field of cancer — claims he has a better idea.

A treatment for one of the more hard to treat types of breast cancer could be a step closer thanks to the discovery by Irish based researchers of a potential new therapy.
The scientists have found that a new drug called THZ-1 is capable of halting the growth of triple negative breast cancer.
The researchers say that while use of THZ-1 in humans is still some way off and further study is necessary, the discovery does open up a wider range of new and less toxic treatment options.

Cancer cells have an enormous need for oxygen and nutrients. Therefore, growing tumors rely on the simultaneous growth of capillaries, the fine branching blood vessels that form their supply network. The formation of new blood vessels, called angiogenesis, is therefore a possible target for cancer therapy. Physicians use special inhibitors called angiogenesis inhibitors to "starve" tumors. However, these drugs, which have been in use for more than a decade, have limited effectiveness. Deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms may help identify further therapy targets in order to prevent vessel formation more effectively.

Hospital groups oppose a proposed federal rule to cut 340B drug payments, but a group representing oncologists applauds the effort it said will curb the abuse of the discount drug program.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has released a proposed rule to cut payment by about 27 percent for certain Medicare Part B drugs purchased through the 340B program. The program is intended to help hospitals that serve a disproportionate number of low-income patients by lowering the cost of drugs.
