New research examining advanced prostate cancer in the U.S. finds that cases may have risen 72 percent in the past decade. But is this idea a true reflection of what's occurring?
The research, conducted by a team at Northwestern University and published recently in the journal Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases, analyzes data from the National Cancer Database, a registry supported by the American College of Surgeons and the American Cancer society. The data sample in this case included more than 700,000 men who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2004 and 2013.

The Community Oncology Alliance (COA) commends Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Tom Carper (D-DE) for introducing the Cancer Care Payment Reform Act of 2016 (S. 3211) establishing a national Oncology Medical Home demonstration project for payment reform under the Medicare program. The purpose of the bill is to change the way Medicare pays for cancer treatment in order to provide well-coordinated, high-quality care that results in lower overall costs to cancer patients and the healthcare system. COA will be asking community oncology practices to actively enlist the support of their senators to build upon the bipartisan co-sponsorship of this legislation.

The National Cancer Database (NCBD) Participant User File (PUF) application is accepting applications for site-specific files, which include cases diagnosed between 2004 and 2014. The application period remains open through Aug. 25.
The NCDB PUF is a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliant data file containing cases submitted to the Commission on Cancer's (CoC) NCDB and complies with the terms of the Business Associate Agreement between the American College of Surgeons and cancer programs accredited by the CoC (i.e., no patients or facilities can be identified). The PUF is designed to provide investigators at CoC-accredited cancer programs with a data resource they can use to review and advance the quality of care delivered to cancer patients through analyses of cases reported to the NCDB. Use of the PUF is not required to meet any CoC standards, but it is an opportunity provided as a benefit of accreditation.
Prospective applicants can find more information about the application process and data items available on the PUF web page.
Additional questions regarding the NCDB PUFs may be directed to the NCDB.

Over the past two decades, the number of thyroid cancer cases has risen — most of which can be explained by diagnoses of small, low-risk cancers.
At the same time, imagine use skyrocketed, most likely due to growing concerns about the cancer coming back.
Researchers used a national cancer database to identify more than 28,000 thyroid cancer diagnoses between 1998 and 2011.
They monitored the use of types of imaging used, additional treatment for recurrence and deaths from the disease.

Even a high-fat Mediterranean diet may protect against breast cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, according to a review published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Hanna Bloomfield, M.D., M.P.H., a professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota and associate chief of staff for research at the Minneapolis VA, and colleagues reviewed 56 studies published from 1990 through April 2016. While the definition of a Mediterranean diet differs, they defined it as a plan that had at least two of seven components and no restriction on healthy fats.

Several adjuvant endocrine therapy options are available for premenopausal patients with endocrine-responsive early-stage breast cancer. It can be a challenge, however, when deciding which option is optimal for a specific patient. Thanks to improved medical therapies, a substantial proportion of premenopausal women with early-stage breast cancer can achieve excellent outcomes with endocrine therapy only, and can avoid chemotherapy, according to medical oncologist Hatem A. Azim Jr, MD, PhD, of the Institut Jules Bordet in Belgium.

Paulette Crowther said she had colon cancer, but she didn't. As she fought for her life, only her children and closest family friends knew her real diagnosis: Stage IV anal cancer. "She didn't even want to say the words anal cancer out loud, let alone talk about it. Colon cancer seemed more normal to her," says Crowther's daughter, Justine Almada. Crowther was diagnosed after a routine colonoscopy picked up a lesion on her anus that was later determined to be squamous cell carcinoma. Further tests showed the cancer had spread to her lymphatic system. In 2010, just two years after the initial diagnosis, she died at the age of 53.
