Surgery better than endoscopy for some early esophageal cancers

For early-stage esophageal cancer, traditional surgical resection has better outcomes than endoscopic resection, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. This is the largest study to date comparing the two procedures for the treatment of the condition.

Scientists discover gene that prevents lung cancer metastasis

Scientists have identified a gene responsible for stopping the movement of cancer from the lungs to other parts of the body, indicating a new way to fight one of the world's deadliest cancers.
By identifying the cause of this metastasis, which often happens quickly in lung cancer and results in a bleak survival rate, scientists are able to explain why some tumors are more prone to spreading than others. The newly discovered pathway, detailed in Molecular Cell, may also help researchers understand and treat the spread of melanoma and cervical cancers.

Pancreatic cancer study finds new genetic risk markers

After comparing the DNA of thousands of people with and without the disease, a new study has identified five genetic markers for pancreatic cancer that raise the risk for developing the deadly disease.
The international consortium of scientists reports the findings in the journal Nature Genetics. The discovery is the result of a third project in a series of genome-wide association studies that began in 2006 under the auspices of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cohort Consortium.
Patient navigation may lead to better breast cancer care in high risk and minority women

Patient navigation, or the linking of a newly diagnosed cancer patient with a professional trained in assisting patients though the complex journey of cancer diagnosis and treatment, may lead to better breast cancer care in high risk and minority women. The findings, recently published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, is the first national study to show a relationship between navigators and the initiation of certain recommended treatments in breast cancer.
