This statistical brief presents data from the Household Component of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey regarding medical expenditures associated with the top five most costly conditions in 2002 and 2012. The top five conditions were determined by totaling and ranking the expenses for the medical care delivered for the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions. Expenditures may be associated with more than one condition and are not unduplicated in the condition totals. Only differences between estimates that are statistically significant at the 0.05 level are discussed in the text. Dollar values are adjusted for inflation by using the gross domestic product implicit price deflator.

Breast cancer much more commonly afflicts women — only about 1 percent of cases in the U.S. are diagnosed in men — but men are still at risk and face many of the same treatment decisions. Women and men who survive breast cancer all share the same fear: that they'll be diagnosed with it again in the future. This fear is why so many breast cancer patients choose to undergo contralateral prophylactic mastectomy, surgery to remove the healthy breast in addition to the breast with malignant tissue, to hopefully reduce the risk in a future diagnosis.

As tumors develop, faults can pop up in what seems like a bewildering number of genes. Each time one cell becomes two, these mistakes can change and become more diverse. But in some cases, the early events that lead to cancer can be readily identified. And for bowel cancer, scientific fingers have been pointing at one particular gene for almost 30 years.

Gastric cancer poses a significant health problem in developing countries and is typically associated with late-stage diagnosis and high mortality. A new study in The American Journal of Pathology points to a pivotal role played by the biomarker microRNA-506 in gastric cancer. Patients whose primary gastric cancer lesions express high levels of miR-506 have significantly longer survival times compared with patients with low miR-506 expression. In addition, miR-506 suppresses tumor growth, blood vessel formation and metastasis.
