Researchers examining how well integrated practice units (IPU) are implemented across 7 cancer centers in Europe found there was no clear, consistent strategy for developing and implementing IPUs, in an analysis that focused mostly on breast cancer clinical pathways.
Structuring cancer care into clinical pathways can reduce variability and improve patient outcomes. IPUs are defined as highly coordinated, multidisciplinary care along an entire clinical pathway, including organizational aspects, and is a key concept in creating value-based healthcare by increasing efficiency and lowering costs.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage increased 5.1 percentage points from 2016 to 2017, and there was also an increase in the number of adolescents up to date with HPV vaccinations, according to research published in the Aug. 24 issue of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

A new computer program can analyze images of patients' lung tumors, specify cancer types, and even identify altered genes driving abnormal cell growth, a new study shows.
Led by researchers at NYU School of Medicine and published online in Nature Medicine, the study found that a type of artificial intelligence, or "machine learning" program, could distinguish with 97 percent accuracy between adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma — two lung cancer types that experienced pathologists at times struggle to parse without confirmatory tests.

Think of it as a cancer therapy zag instead of a zig. While many groups are developing cancer therapies to target proteins and pathways that are highly active in cancer cells, a team of investigators from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital, with collaborators at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, is taking a new approach that allows them to go after what is not there. Loss of tumor suppressors — genes such as PTEN and p53 — help cancer grow unchecked. But targeting proteins that have been lost rather than gained in cancer has been challenging. The Boston-based collaborative team has leveraged advances in nanotechnology and the unique properties of mRNA to inhibit tumor growth in preclinical models of prostate cancer by targeting PTEN. The results of the team's efforts are published this week in Nature Biomedical Engineering.

This, they say, could lead to improved cancer treatments. Although previous studies had already revealed that the pathway — called Arf6-AMP1-PRKD2 — plays a key role in cancer invasiveness, its relation to treatment resistance remained unclear.

Lumoxiti (moxetumomab pasudotox-tdfk) injection has been approved to treat certain instances of relapsed or refractory hairy cell leukemia (HCL), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said recently.
Lumoxiti, a CD22-directed cytotoxin, was approved for adults who have had at least two prior therapies for the disease. The FDA granted this application Fast Track and Priority Review designations.

Researchers at Technical University Munich have reported findings related to the development of colon cancer. "We originally wanted to study the role of bacteria in the intestines in the development of intestinal inflammation," explains Professor Dirk Haller from the Department of Nutrition and Immunology at the Weihenstephan Science Centre of the TUM. "However, the surprising result for us was the discovery that bacteria, together with stress in cells, caused tumours (exclusively in the colon) and without the involvement of inflammation."

The study authors state that more countries should now enforce food labeling that clearly specifies nutritional value. The British Food Standards Agency developed their nutrient profiling system (FSAm-NPS) as a way to ensure that people are able to clearly see what the nutritional value is of any food product.

The AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, Eighth Edition is the first edition to have an electronic book (eBook) version. It is available for purchase now on Amazon and is the most current version of the manual (September 2018).
Since 1977, the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) has published eight editions of cancer staging manuals using contemporary, evidenced-based literature to build a common language of cancer for the care of cancer patients by clinicians and for the cancer surveillance community. The print version of the eighth edition was first published in October 2016 and went into effect for all cancer cases diagnosed on or after Jan. 1, 2018. The eighth edition presents evidence-based revisions for the staging of cancer for a number of organ sites. The chapters include the rationale and rules for staging; the definitions of tumor, lymph node involvement, and metastasis; stage groupings; and histologic grade.
There have been updates since the first printing of the eighth edition, all of which are incorporated in this eBook version available through Amazon’s Kindle. The Kindle version can be used on any device (PC, MAC, iPhone, iPad, Android) with the free Kindle app. The electronic version allows for highlighting, adding notes and bookmarks, and creating flashcards. The AJCC has a curated FAQ document to address common questions that can be accessed at cancerstaging.org. All other questions related to the eighth edition can be sent to ajcc@facs.org.
