One form of pancreatic cancer has a new enemy: a two-drug combination discovered by UF Health researchers that inhibits tumors and kills cancer cells in mouse models. For the first time, researchers have shown that a certain protein becomes overabundant in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, allowing them to thrive. They also found that pairing a synthetic compound with an existing drug provides a more effective anticancer punch than a single drug.

A high risk for venous thromboembolism following surgery for long-bone reconstruction was found in patients with metastatic cancer.
These findings from a study by Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University researchers were published in Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
The researchers retrospectively reviewed 336 cases in which patients underwent intramedullary nailing for metastatic bone lesions.

Eight of 14 patients in the first clinical trial of personalized cellular therapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia responded to the therapy, with some complete remissions continuing beyond 4 1/2 years. These results, published in Science Translational Medicine, represent the most mature data from clinical trials of an approach known as CTL019.
The trial was conducted at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. A team from Penn's Abramson Cancer Center and the Perelman School of Medicine developed the CTL019 approach.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) and the Commission on Cancer (CoC) encourage your program to promote the event and use it as an opportunity to display/promote your accreditation status. To help you publicize this event within your program and the community, the NAPBC and the CoC have created a poster that you can download and print. Programs that are solely CoC accredited or accredited by both the CoC and NAPBC can access the poster by logging into CoC Datalinks and clicking on Marketing Resources Staff and NAPBC-accredited breast centers can log into the NAPBC portal and click on the "2015 Breast Cancer Awareness Month Poster" link in the "View Downloadable Center Resources" section to access the marketing resources Web page. More than half of people invited to take a new bowel cancer screening test didn't take up the opportunity — even though it could stop them developing or dying from the disease, according to a Cancer Research UK report published recently in the Journal of Medical Screening. Cancer Research UK scientists found that people from poorer neighbourhoods were less likely to take up screening, with only one third in the most deprived neighbourhood going for their appointment compared to over half in the most affluent.
