College launches new public awareness campaign on the value of ACS Quality Programs

   |
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has launched a new social media campaign aimed at patients to let them know the value of care provided at health care facilities that participate in ACS Quality Programs. The initiative was unveiled this week on the College’s Facebook and Twitter sites.
Based on messages that highlight the College’s mission to improve surgical care, how ACS Quality Programs make the surgical experience safer and better and that ACS-accredited or verified hospitals improve surgery results and lower costs, the campaign directs viewers to the ACS website, where they can read more about each of the Quality Programs.

NAPBC modifies some standards for 2020
|
   |
The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers’ (NAPBC) Board of Directors recently agreed to modify requirements to the 2018 NAPBC Standards Manual (2018 edition) for two standards: Standard 1.2: Multidisciplinary Breast Care Conference and Standard 6.1: Quality and Outcomes. These changes will go into effect on January 1, 2020.
The NAPBC Clarifications, Reminders and FAQ document released in May 2019 has been updated to reflect these changes. It may be downloaded from the NAPBC website
and the resources section of the NAPBC portal. October 2019 additions/updates are designated in the document.
If you have any questions regarding the interpretation of NAPBC standards, please be sure to post your question to the NAPBC section of the CAnswer Forum.

Additional information for coding skin/melanoma surgery

   |
The Technical Advisory Group (TAG), an ad hoc group with representatives from all the standard setters, has made a consensus decision to use the pathology reports as the first priority for assigning melanoma surgery codes. If margin information is not available on the pathology report, the operative report may be used when margins are specified. Note: this decision does not apply to the margins data item, only to surgery codes. If margins are not stated on either report, use unknown.

Mutations in PTEN, a top autism gene, can lead to autism, cancer — or perhaps both. Levels of a single molecule may predict which of the two outcomes is more likely, according to a new study. The molecule, fumarate, is produced in cells as mitochondria extract energy from food. Fumarate levels are lower in people with autism than in those with cancer, the study suggests.

Scientists at the University of Virginia School of Medicine have discovered a strange new organelle inside our cells that helps to prevent cancer by ensuring that genetic material is sorted correctly as cells divide. The researchers have connected problems with the organelle to a subset of breast cancer tumors that make lots of mistakes when segregating chromosomes.

A new form of the genome-editing tool CRISPR-Cas9 appears to significantly expand the range of diseases that could be treated with the technology, by enabling scientists to precisely change any of DNA’s four “letters” into any other and insert or delete any stretch of DNA — all more efficiently and precisely than previous versions of CRISPR. Crucially, scientists reported recently, it accomplishes all that without making genome-scrambling cuts in the double helix, as classic CRISPR and many of its offshoots do.

Some of the most important players on a cancer patient’s health care team are people they typically never meet or interact with — the pathologists who evaluate their tissue samples to determine the type and stage of disease they have.
And as interest in patient-pathologist consulting programs has gained momentum nationally, researchers at Michigan Medicine have conducted the first known survey to quantify patient interest in pathology services and to better understand how patients might feel about meeting their pathologist and seeing images of their tissues.
