Methylnaltrexone, which is approved for the treatment of opioid-related constipation, appears to extend survival in people receiving opioids for advanced cancer pain, according to new research.
Increasing evidence indicates that treating cancer pain with opioids can actually shorten people's lives, said Jonathan Moss, M.D., professor of anesthesia from the University of Chicago.

U.S. Reps. Lynn Jenkins, R-Kansas, and Richard Neal, D-Massachusetts, in late October sponsored H.Res.487, a non-binding resolution that recognizes the importance of accreditation by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) to ensure patient access to high-quality, comprehensive cancer care. The College is meeting with lawmakers to gain their support for the resolution. As part of that effort, ACS Fellows are urged to visit www.surgeonsvoice.org to contact their representative to ask her or him to cosponsor the resolution. Others are urged to contact their representative to ask for co-sponsorship as well.

The launch of an advance practice nurse outpatient follow-up clinic improved symptom management for high-risk patients with head and neck cancer following radiation therapy, according to findings from a study conducted at Cleveland Clinic. This initiative led to fewer emergency department visits and hospital admissions, results showed. "These results are significant, as they suggest more intensive follow-up in high-risk head and neck patients can improve patient outcomes," Bridgett Harr, CNP, of the department of radiation oncology at Cleveland Clinic, told HemOnc Today.

Cancer survivors may face challenges related to workplace accommodations, such as fear of requesting accommodations and difficulty with accommodating jobs, a new study published online ahead of print in the Journal of Cancer Survivorship has shown.
Because the number of people surviving cancer and staying at or returning to work is increasing, researchers sought to investigate the types of workplace accommodations reported to have been provided to survivors of cancer, processes relevant to ensuring effective accommodations and barriers to implementing workplace accommodations.

Primary care and oncology services will need to integrate structures, systems and approaches to care in order to manage the impending surge of cancer patients, a group projected to nearly double in the next two decades, a special Commission reported.
The Commission, an international mix of cancer specialists, primary care providers and policy researchers from several high-income countries, estimated that the need for cancer care will increase by 40 percent in the next 20 years, a demand that will not be met by the number of physicians entering the field. A shared care model between the two specialties could help meet the increased demands, Professor Greg Rubin, FRCGP, of Durham University in the U.K., and colleagues reported in The Lancet Oncology.

Mayo Clinic via Medical Xpress
Only 1 in 5 U.S. pancreatic cancer patients receive a widely available, inexpensive blood test at diagnosis that can help predict whether they are likely to have a better or worse outcome than average and guide treatment accordingly, a Mayo Clinic study shows. People who test positive for elevated levels of a particular tumor marker tend to do worse than others, but if they are candidates for surgery and have chemotherapy before their operations, this personalized treatment sequence eliminates the elevated biomarker's negative effect, researchers found.

Researchers have developed cancer drug-packed "grenades" armed with heat sensitive triggers, allowing for treatment to be targeted directly at tumors, according to two studies due to be presented at the National Cancer Research Institute Cancer Conference in Liverpool.
The team based at the University of Manchester has been developing liposomes — small, bubble-like structures built out of cell membrane that are used as packages to deliver molecules into cells — to carry drugs into cancer cells. The challenge, as with any treatment, is to direct the liposomes and their payload directly to tumors while sparing healthy tissue.
