Oncology care providers should develop interventions that remind and encourage them to have physical activity communications with their patients who have early-stage cancer, concluded a study published online ahead of print in the journal Cancer.
Regular physical activity reduces cancer-related fatigue, maintains quality of life and physical function and improves overall prognosis and survival for patients with cancer. However, communications regarding physical activity vary among oncology care providers.

Use of a blood test to detect prostate cancer fell after a U.S. government-back panel advised against using it, researchers found.
"I'm hoping that men are being allowed to make a choice and this decline reflects the fact that they prefer not to be screened," said study author Dr. Otis Brawley, who is chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society in Atlanta.

Studying blood serum compounds of different molecular weights has led scientists to a set of biomarkers that may enable development of a highly accurate screening test for early-stage ovarian cancer. Using advanced liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques coupled with machine learning computer algorithms, researchers have identified 16 metabolite compounds that provided unprecedented accuracy in distinguishing 46 women with early-stage ovarian cancer from a control group of 49 women who did not have the disease.

Only 1 in 5 U.S. patients with pancreatic cancer receive a widely available, inexpensive blood test at diagnosis that can predict whether they are likely to have a better or worse outcome than average and guide treatment accordingly. People who test positive for elevated levels of a particular tumor marker tend to do worse than others, but if they are candidates for surgery and have chemotherapy before their surgery, this personalized treatment sequence eliminates the elevated biomarker's negative effect, researchers found.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recently published final draft guidance rejecting the routine use of Roche's Kadcyla (trastuzumab emtansine) on the NHS because the price of the breast cancer therapy "remains too high." The agency issued similar guidance in 2014.

It is becoming more and more difficult to decide which treatment schedule to give premenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer following the results from the TEXT and SOFT trials," said Vivianne Tjan-Heijnen, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the department of medical oncology at Maastricht University Medical Centre in Maastricht, The Netherlands. The Tamoxifen and Exemestane Trial (TEXT) and the Suppression of Ovarian Function Trial (SOFT) raised a number of questions about the value of ovarian function suppression and the role of adjuvant aromatase inhibitors in these patients.

Recently, Anil Potti, M.D., a former star cancer researcher at Duke University, was found by federal investigators to have "engaged in research misconduct" by including "false research data" in multiple published studies and other documents. He received a five-year ban from federal grant funding as punishment.
However, the research in the published studies was undertaken by a team of investigators at Duke, including other clinicians, statisticians and scientists. Various findings led, in turn, to large clinical trials that involved hundreds of patients and subsequent collaboration with other researchers. Is it fair that only one person should take all the blame?
