Primary cytoreductive surgery was associated with improved survival compared with neoadjuvant chemotherapy in otherwise healthy women age 70 years or younger with advanced-stage epithelial ovarian cancer, according to findings published in JAMA Oncology.
Because the benefits of primary cytoreductive surgery relative to neoadjuvant chemotherapy remain uncertain, researchers sought to compare overall survival of primary cytoreductive surgery with that of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in a large national population of women with advanced-stage epithelial ovarian cancer.

The use of radiotherapy (RT) was associated with an overall survival benefit in patients with prostate cancer and lymph node involvement who underwent radical prostatectomy and were also treated with androgen-deprivation therapy, according to a new study. Approximately 12 percent of prostate adenocarcinoma patients have regional lymph node involvement at diagnosis.

How does a cancer cell burn calories? New research from Thomas Jefferson University shows that breast cancer cells rely on a different process for turning fuel into energy than normal cells. The results were recently published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. "Our finding is part of a growing interest in studying the metabolic function of cancer," says Ubaldo Martinez-Outschoorn, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Medical Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University and researcher at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson. "The better we understand how cancers thrive, the better we'll be able to cut off the energy supply they need for survival."

The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) has released the eighth edition of its Cancer Staging Manual. This edition presents evidence‐based revisions for staging cancer for a number of organ sites and includes the rationale and rules for staging; the definitions of tumor, lymph node involvement and metastasis (TNM); stage groupings; and histologic grade. The new publication can be purchased online at www.cancerstaging.org.

ASCO
ASCO and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) have updated their chemotherapy administration safety standards to include pediatric oncology care. The updated standards can be found in the Journal of Oncology Practice.
In 2009, ASCO and ONS published the initial set of standards for safely administering chemotherapy in the outpatient setting. The standards were updated in 2011 to include inpatient facilities and again in 2013 to include safe oral chemotherapy administration and management.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common form of leukemia, with more than 4,000 cases in the U.K. every year.
