Application of deep learning algorithms to whole-slide pathology images can potentially improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. Assess the performance of automated deep learning algorithms at detecting metastases in hematoxylin and eosin–stained tissue sections of lymph nodes of women with breast cancer and compare it with pathologists’ diagnoses in a diagnostic setting.

The Commission on Cancer (CoC) announced that effective December 11, 2017, the percentage of delivered survivorship care plans to eligible patients required for CoC compliance with Standard 3.3 has been lowered to 50 percent for 2018. All CoC-accredited programs will be expected to meet or exceed the delivery of survivorship care plans to 50 percent of eligible patients by the end of 2018. This announcement replaces the current language on page 59 of the Cancer Program Standards: Ensuring Patient-Centered Care (2016 edition) that required the delivery of survivorship care plans to 75 percent of eligible patients for 2018.
Additional revisions to CoC Standard 3.3 will be announced in the first quarter of 2018 but will not go into effect until January 1, 2019. All CoC-related questions should be submitted to the CAnswer Forum.
All centers accredited by National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) will also be expected to meet or exceed the delivery of survivorship care plans to 50 percent of eligible patients by the end of 2017 and beyond as stated in Standard 2.20 of the 2018 National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers Standards Manual that goes into effect April 1, 2018. Please forward all questions regarding the NAPBC standards to napbc@facs.org.

In most cases, prostate cancer is cured by surgical removal of the tumor and/or by radiotherapy. However, 20 percent of patients will need treatment to remove tumor cells but this treatment ceases to be effective after two or three years and the cancer develops further. Once this stage of the disease has been reached, there is no cure. A team headed by Xavier Salvatella, ICREA researcher at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine, has discovered a new avenue through which to attack prostate cancer cells that have developed drug-resistance.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States, with more than 230,000 women diagnosed annually. (Skin cancer remains the most common.) Patients often describe the process of making a treatment decision as worrisome, so one research team wanted to explore how these patients became informed about their treatment options, and why some women might feel less than completely informed.

Like nomads who carry tokens of home on their travels, colorectal cancer cells that spread to other parts of the body appear to bring several of the species of bacteria that were their companions in the colon, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute scientists report in a new study in the journal Science. The findings are the latest evidence that the microbiome — the menagerie of microorganisms in the body — may play a role in colon cancer growth and could offer a new avenue for treatment of the disease, researchers say.

A blood test using infrared spectroscopy can be used to diagnose two types of cancer, lymphoma and melanoma, according to a study led by Georgia State University. Researchers used mid-infrared spectroscopy to analyze blood serum derived from experimental mice and differentiate mice with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and subcutaneous melanoma from healthy mice and also between these 2 tumorous conditions. The mid-infrared spectral region of the electromagnetic spectrum is frequently used to characterize biological samples at the molecular level.

The 2018 ACS Quality and Safety Conference: Partners in Quality will be held in Orlando, July 21-24. This education program brings health care professionals together to discuss and apply current knowledge pertaining to national and local quality initiatives in the field of surgery. Attendees will learn techniques to manage, analyze and interpret data to make a positive impact at their facilities. The Cancer Programs are excited to be included in this one-of-a-kind conference and encourage staff working in CoC — and/or NAPBC-accredited programs to submit an abstract for a podium or poster presentation. The abstract should relate to surgical quality improvement initiatives, including the development, implementation or validation of best practices within your accredited program. Abstracts for this conference will be accepted until Jan. 26, 2018. (Please note: This is not the 2018 Cancer Program Annual Conference that will be held in the fall of 2018. Patients with a high fatty liver index, a noninvasive method used to predict non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, showed a higher risk for colorectal adenomas, according to new research.
Investigators concluded that the fatty liver index may therefore be useful for predicting the presence of colorectal adenomas, which are considered “the GI manifestation of metabolic syndrome.”

Researchers from Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM) João Lobo Antunes have found a mechanism through which certain types of leukemia resist chemotherapy, thus revealing novel molecular targets that may be used to improve the efficiency of this type of treatment.
In patients with acute myeloid leukemia, cancer cells resist the effects of chemotherapy, many times resulting in disease recurrence and ultimately death.

A breast surgeon’s goal is to eliminate cancer while achieving a cosmetic result that shows little evidence a surgical procedure had occurred. Use of oncoplastic surgery has dramatically increased nationwide over the last several years. The National Consortium of Breast Centers (NCoBC) recognizes the pivotal role of surgery in the overall management of the breast cancer patient and will be introducing an Oncoplastic Surgery Course at the NCoBC Annual Interdisciplinary Meeting in Las Vegas, Nev., March 10-11, 2018. This unique course will utilize the latest life-like models of a woman’s breasts with the ability to sew, cut and reconstruct tissue in real time. Nationally known surgeons will lecture, demonstrate and be present during the two-day, hands-on lab. Each participant will be able to both observe and perform multiple oncoplastic procedures on these models. For more information, visit the NCoBC 2018 Conference website. Early registration is suggested.

Genentech researchers have identified an enzyme that shifts pancreatic cancer cells to a more aggressive, drug-resistant state by epigenetically modifying the cells' chromatin. The study, which will be published in the Journal of Cell Biology, suggests that targeting this enzyme could make pancreatic cancer cells more vulnerable to existing therapies that currently have only limited effect against this deadly form of cancer.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-associated deaths. One of the most promising ways to treat it is by immunotherapy, a strategy that turns the patient's immune system against the tumor. In the past 20 years, immunotherapies have been largely based on the degree by which immune cells can infiltrate a lung tumor, which has become a major predictor of the patient's overall prognosis.
