On behalf of the entire ADAA family
American Dental Assistants Association    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

On behalf of the entire ADAA family, we wish you all a very safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday. We certainly have much for which to be thankful. Today, due in no small measure to the dedication of brave men and women in our Armed Forces, our nation - indeed the world - is a safer place to live. That service, of course, can and does demand the highest of sacrifices. We should be especially mindful this year of those families who will have one less chair at the table, as well as those who have no chair at all, much less a home in which to celebrate it. Theirs will be a particularly sadden holiday, and I ask you to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Elizabeth Schmidt: A dental assistant you should know!
American Dental Assistants Association    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

When I was a senior in high school my friends and I were looking over the college catalogs and we decided to attend the dental assisting program together. At Citrus College in Azusa, Calif., I attended a two-year program to earn an Associate of Science Degree. Our final exam was passing the Certified Dental Assistants Exam. I joined the ADAA as a student member while I was in the program in 1969. I spent the first years of my dental assisting career moving around Southern California.

Vegetables containing vitamin B can slash risk of mouth cancer

Dentistry IQ    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Women who consume high volumes of folic acid found in Vitamin B from vegetables and some fruits are less likely to suffer from mouth cancer. Women who drank a high volume of alcohol and had low folic acid intake were three times more likely to develop mouth cancer than those who drank high volumes of alcohol but had high volumes of folic acid in their diet. Alcohol is one of the major risk factors for mouth cancer and those who drink to excess are four times more likely to be diagnosed. This is the first time that folic acid intake has been shown to affect the risk of the disease. More

Why flossing can prevent a heart attack
Daily Express    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Your grandmother may have slept with her dentures in a jar by the side of the bed, but with improved dentistry and good oral hygiene younger generations can expect to keep their own teeth. However, if you are one of the 98 percent of people in the U.K. that the Dental Health Foundation estimates is not regularly flossing, your gums and teeth won't be as healthy as they could be and your health might be being suffering in quite surprising ways. What do you look for in hand hygiene products?
Dental Economics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hand washing has been the historical standard for cleanliness since the early 1800s. Since that time, a variety of chemical agents have been shown to be effective, ranging from the earliest solutions of lime and soda chlorides to current, less toxic, antimicrobial antiseptics. More

The cavity capitals
Men's Health Magazine via MSN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
St. Louis is a great city. There's a lot to smile about — except for the smiles themselves. St. Louis is the town with the worst teeth, the most dentally challenged in the land. That's according to a survey by Men's Health Magazine. The health magazine ranked 100 major U.S. cities based on community water fluoridation; the percentage of people who saw a dentist in the past year or have had their teeth extracted; the percentage of households using dental floss; money spent on oral hygiene products; and the number of dentist offices per capita. How your dental lab can help you stand out
Dentistry IQ    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As a dental assistant for 29 years, I never had great communication with a dental lab in any office, Tija Hunter, EFDA, is an expanded functions dental assistant/office manager in O'Fallon, Mo.. The lab just came and picked up the box, and then, a couple weeks later, brought the box back. That was it. The lab staff was all invisible except for the delivery guy. Last year, our frustrations grew when we felt our removable work was not what we expected it to be. More
