ADAA Now Accepting Submissions for 2021 Annual Conference, Resilience & Recovery: From Research to Practice
The 2021 ADAA Conference Committee invites you to submit your presentations for the 41st Annual Conference. ADAA leads the way in bringing together a multidisciplinary community of basic and clinical researchers and clinicians with diverse backgrounds in psychiatry, psychology, social work, counseling, nursing, neuroscience, and more. Watch ADAA’s Submissions Tutorial Video. Visit ADAA’s conference webpage for more information as it becomes available and to sign-up for conference updates. Registration information will be available by late September 2020.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE IMPACT OF COVID-19:
While ADAA is looking forward to hosting our annual conference, we recognize that the impact of COVID-19 may interfere with our ability to convene a fully in-person conference in Boston in 2021. As such, ADAA is planning for a variety of contingencies including offering our conference as a hybrid meeting or a virtual conference.
- ATTENTION ACCEPTED 2020 SESSION PRESENTERS:
ADAA is pleased to announce that all accepted submissions for the 2020 Annual Conference will be automatically accepted for the 2021 conference and will not require additional peer review. Please note, however, that ADAA has launched a new submissions portal for 2021 so you must resubmit your 2020 accepted presentation. While ADAA encourages you to update your data as appropriate the overall topic cannot be changed. If you wish to submit a new session abstract, it must be treated as a new submission.
ADAA Encourages New Research Poster Submissions. Poster sessions are lively, engaging sessions promoting the exchange of new research findings in a visual format. Poster sessions are interactive and provide an opportunity to interact with researchers, to ask questions, discuss findings, and share information. Regardless of the final format of the 2021 Annual Conference, ADAA will be incorporating poster sessions. Click here for more information or click here to begin your submission.
Apply for the Donald F. Klein Early Career Investigator Award:
ADAA offers an annual award to an early career investigator for the best original research paper on neurobiology, psychopharmacology, psychosocial treatments, or experimental psychopathology of anxiety disorders and depression. Click here to begin your application.

 Angela Neal-Barnett, PhD
I became involved with ADAA almost 25 years ago. I was an anxiety disorders researcher and membership afforded me the opportunity to interact with other anxiety disorder researchers in what was at the time, a small, intimate setting.
When I was young, poor, and untenured I always enjoyed the copious amount of hot hors d'oeuvres served during the ADAA annual conference poster sessions. Today ADAA's commitment to the public interest and multiculturalism keeps me involved. My ADAA membership also offers great opportunities to share my research on anxiety and Black Americans across different platforms (academic journals, blogs, social media, webinars, etc.) and reach people outside of academia.

A lethal pandemic and widespread unemployment have coincided with a tense presidential campaign and nationwide unrest.
For the advertising industry, that means opportunity.
“If history has taught us anything, it’s that we can get through anything — and that beer sometimes helps,” the actor Paul Giamatti says in a Coors Light commercial.
The narrator of a commercial for Firstleaf, a subscription wine club, echoes the sentiment: “We’re going to need a lot of wine to get through this year.” Stephanie Van Stee, an associate professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis who specializes in health communication, advises consumers not to allow stress to overwhelm their skepticism. “You need to be looking at these advertisements critically and do your research to make sure you know what you’re getting into with some of these things,” she said.

Nearly a quarter of people in the United States are experiencing symptoms of depression, according to a study published Wednesday. That's nearly three times the number before the COVID-19 pandemic began.
And those with a lower income, smaller savings and people severely affected by the pandemic — either through a job loss, for example, or by the death of a loved one — are more likely to be bearing the burden of these symptoms.

Active shooter drills became one of the most common school safety measures implemented nationwide in recent years, despite widespread fears that the procedures heighten anxiety, and evidence that school shooters, like the one in Parkland, Florida, use knowledge of the drills to their advantage. Teachers unions in February called for schools to not conduct active shooter drills with students. Now, new research adds data to those concerns.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to stretch the country's healthcare system to its limits, frontline healthcare professionals are at greater risk of experiencing vicarious trauma. Beyond normal stress, vicarious trauma results from repeated exposure to traumatic events that lead to escalated feelings of powerlessness and guilt similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. In turn, healthcare professionals who experience vicarious trauma are susceptible to increased stress, anxiety, substance abuse, depression, and unfortunately, suicide.

Alcoholism
The COVID‐19 pandemic has resulted in massive disruptions to society, to the economy, and to daily life. Some people may turn to alcohol to cope with stress during the pandemic, which may put them at risk for heavy drinking and alcohol‐related harms. Research is needed to identify factors that are relevant for coping‐motivated drinking during these extraordinary circumstances to inform interventions. This study provides an empirical examination of coping motive pathways to alcohol problems during the early stages of the COVID‐19 pandemic.

A new randomized control trial has found that turning mobile mental health intervention into a smartphone game can potentially improve well-being. Published Sept. 2, 2020 in the open-access journal PLOS ONE, the five-week study conducted by Silja Litvin at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and her colleagues shows that gamifying the content of mobile interventions improved resilience, a key character trait that reduces the susceptibility to depression, stress, and anxiety.

Although researchers have known for decades that depression runs in families, new research from Binghamton University, State University of New York, suggests that children suffering from social anxiety may be at particular risk for depression in the future.
"We already know from previous research that children with social anxiety symptoms are at high risk of developing depression, as are offspring of depressed mothers," said Holly Kobezak, co-author of the new paper and lab manager at the Mood Disorders Institute at Binghamton University. "Our findings take what is already known one step further by suggesting that the combination of these risk factors may be even more insidious than the presence of either risk factor alone."
