Chicagoans and out-of-town visitors alike now are able to see rare and valuable gemstones from The Field Museum's Grainger Hall of Gems, many set in one-of-a-kind jewelry creations by designer Lester Lampert. Rare blue diamond auctioned in Hong Kong for $6.4M

A rare, flawless blue diamond that once was part of the legendary De Beers Millennium Collection sold for $6.4 million at auction, exceeding the top price estimate but falling short of the 2009 record. The 5.16-carat, pear-shaped diamond was the first gem of its kind to appear in an auction from the collection that De Beers, the world's largest diamond producer, presented in 2000 to celebrate the millennium. The Gemological Institute of America announced that it will host its second GIA Mini Jewelry Career Fair in Las Vegas during the JCK Show on June 6. The Mini Jewelry Career Fair, sponsored by JCK Events, is a condensed version of the institute's popular career coaching and job search events that have helped place candidates in the jewelry industry for the past 19 years. A recruiting area for employers interested in meeting the industry's prospects in person has been added this year. More

Sotheby's New York spring Magnificent Jewels sale April 20

An exceptionally rare colored diamond will be a highlight of Sotheby's New York spring Magnificent Jewels sale April 20. The 7.67-carat type-IIa fancy intense pinkish-orange diamond ring is believed to be the largest internally flawless diamond of this pinkish-orange color graded by the Gemological Institute of America to date. It is estimated to garner between $2.5 million to $3.5 million. Colored diamonds have been commanding record-breaking prices at auction for the past two years, making this stone even more watched. Court rejects Tiffany's appeal on eBay ruling

A U.S. court of appeals on April 1 upheld a lower court's ruling that eBay cannot be held liable for trademark infringement, meaning it is not responsible for the sale of counterfeit Tiffany & Co. items on its Web site. Tiffany sued eBay in 2004 after notifying the online retailer that 73 percent of a random sample of supposed Tiffany silver jewelry offered on the site was counterfeit. Tiffany sought a ruling that would require eBay to remove counterfeits from its site, which it says made up the majority of the Tiffany jewelry items posted for sale on eBay. More
