GemFair sees solid traffic at JCK Las Vegas

The American GemTrade Association GemFair at the JCK Las Vegas Show reported positive results in its first year at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. The event was held on the Beach Level of the convention center from June 2-7. "We had great traffic on our first day with plenty of active buying taking place," stated AGTA CEO Douglas K. Hucker. "We had solid traffic throughout the rest of the show with most exhibitors saying that their expectations had been surpassed." More

AGTA publishes materials in Spanish

The American Gem Trade Association is now offering its GemCards and Guide to Colored Gemstones brochure in Spanish. "We've had many requests for Spanish materials from retailers, especially in stores in the southern states and Mexico," CEO Douglas Hucker said. GemCards include images of specific gemstones on the front with several paragraphs of information on the back. The content is written with the consumer in mind, and discusses the key quality factors of each gemstone, along with history, lore and advice on proper care. More

Gemfields expands into rubies with Mozambique acquisition

Gemfields has conditionally agreed to acquire a 75 percent stake in a Mozambique ruby deposit for $2.5 million. Mining has taken place only on a relatively small area of the site, and the current owner, Mwiriti Limitada, wants to scale up the operation. Gemfields CEO Ian Harebottle said, "We are particularly pleased to announce this first and consequential step in our diversification into other premium colored gemstones. This is arguably the most important ruby deposit in Mozambique today and its production to date has been likened in quality to both that produced in Burma and also at Winza in Tanzania." More

Gem-miner TanzaniteOne has secured an option to buy a sapphire project in Australia as it moves to advance its diversification strategy for premium colored gemstones. CEO Bernard Olivier said that securing an option over the project, located in the Sapphire field, fit into the company's diversification strategy by expanding into a new colored gemstone through a project where it could rapidly implement advanced mining and recovery techniques.
