Esmeralda Mine to shine again

For the past 10 years, Pala International has engaged in a quest to obtain the Esmeralda Mine in Mesa Grande, Calif. The purchase is nearly complete, having entered escrow on July 12 and now funded. Survey: Affluent households lack confidence in the economy

The top 20 percent of households by income are no longer feeling confident about economic conditions in the U.S. and are spending less, according to a quarterly survey of affluent consumers. Unity Marketing's Luxury Consumption Index took its steepest quarterly plunge since the recession began, falling 16.8 points to bottom out at 66 points. This is significantly lower than the previous period's 82.8 reading. The LCI currently stands close to its level at the onset of the recession. More

Gemfields Kagem mine posts strong gains

Mining company Gemfields has reported record annual production from its emerald mine in Zambia with a jump in grades per ton and a cut in production costs. In an operational update for its fourth quarter and full year to June 2011, the company says annual production increased 90 percent to 33 million carats versus the previous year. More
