Yahoo! News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
A rare pink diamond that goes on sale next month could fetch up to $38 million, according to auctioneers Sotheby's. The "fancy intense pink" 24.78-carat gem is being sold by an unidentified private collector, the auction house said. "We're able to say it's been in the possession of the same owner for 60 years but beyond that we're not able to reveal more," Sotheby's spokesman Matthew Weigman said. The diamond was last sold by New York jeweler Harry Winston and has a classic emerald cut with gently rounded corners, the company said. More

Jewelry highlights from Paris, Milan
Jewelry Insider    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jewelry hunting at last year's spring ready-to-wear collections was like shooting fish in a barrel. Everywhere you looked there were huge statement necklaces, boatloads of bangles and lots of layered links. This year? The runway shine is as dull as Michael Bolton quickstep. However, there are two noteworthy designers that used the jewel to make their lines pop: Giorgio Armani in Milan and Zac Posen in Paris. More

Recently, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History unveiled its latest addition to the National Gem Collection, the Cullinan diamond necklace — a piece dating back to 1910 and boasting a history nearly as rich as its famous neighbor, the Hope Diamond. A 30-carat piece is crafted in the Edwardian style, and it boasts a unique structure that allows it to be worn as both brooch and necklace. The centerpiece stone is a large 2.6-carat "fancy blue" diamond with a chain of smaller blue and white diamond pieces. More

Sun catcher
Color-n-Ice    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The name sunstone has become rather a "catch-all" word for a broad range of attractive gemstones from the feldspar family of minerals. Aventurine feldspar has become one of the most popular gemstones among artisan jewelers owing to its unique internal properties as contrasted to solid color gemstones; you never will see exactly the same sunstone twice. Suspended inside every sunstone are miniature metallic platelets that reflect a glittering light back to the eye of the viewer. This capability is called schiller. More

Schwarzenegger signs cadmium in children's jewelry legislation
IDEX    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed into law the state's recently passed cadmium in children's jewelry legislation. The new law prohibits the manufacturing, shipping and sale of children's jewelry or jewelry's components containing more than 0.03 percent (300 ppm) of cadmium as determined by a total weight test. California defines children as 6 and younger. The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2012. The laws were triggered by an Associated Press report early in 2010, which disclosed that high levels of cadmium were being detected in children's jewelry purchased from U.S. retailers. More

Niall Harbison: 7 important social media trends for the next year
The Next Web    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Social media changes from month to month. Trends come and go quicker than the seasons change. The latest trendy site could be next year's MySpace, and the hottest new site probably hasn't even been conceived yet or is at the couple-of-guys-in-a-garage stage. Having said that, there are some trends that I think will continue over the coming year, and with that in mind I wanted to share them here. Rather than focusing in on the finer detail, I have compiled the list in broader terms with all the main players represented. More
