Celebrity hang time: Ellen Barkin's Oscar jewels do a sequel
The New York Observer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In 2005, actress Ellen Barkin wore a vivid orange dress to the Academy Awards, topped by large hanging topaz earrings encircled with diamonds and ruby clusters. But unlike most celebrities, Barkin didn't borrow the gems for the evening — she owned them. They were a gift from her then husband, Revlon founder and billionaire Ronald Perelman. The earrings, from the small Swiss jewelry house JAR, are on the block Oct. 20 at Christie's carrying an estimate of $300,000 to $400,000. More

The strategy execution gap lies with the inability that employees and management have to relate to the same goals. In this context, engagement becomes a management imperative. The lessons we learn from social media teach us a basic principle: Before selling an idea or product, you must engage your customers, listen to what they have to say and gain their trust. More

Whether on the wholesale or retail level, a diamond's cut is critical in any sales presentation. In fact, a great many diamond companies make the quality of their cut their primary marketing focus. Brands such as Hearts on Fire have made large inroads into the market and command significant premiums over non-branded and standard-cut diamonds. The term "ideal cut" is widely used, and a great deal of time and money has been expended on studies to define the ideal angles and proportions that allow the most dispersion and brilliance in the standard round brilliant-cut diamond.
