Erin Sharp-Newton, M. Arch, Assoc. AIA, in Today's AIA New Jersey Women In Architecture Spotlight
AIANJ
Growing up in my world, the only architects around were on TV, and they were all male. Art, design, reading, writing, drawing, imagining all came naturally to me, as did building and technology. In High School, I was the only female in Mechanical and Technical Classes. Then I went to study and work in a design firm in Europe. There it appeared to be equally balanced between male and female architects and designers. The field seemed to have more of a gender-neutral perspective.

Risk Strategies
Together with growing pressure to shorten project schedules and decrease costs, there is a general acknowledgment that specialty subcontractors often have their own approach to fabrication and installation of project components. It is therefore increasingly common for architects and engineers to delegate aspects of the project’s design to the general contractor and its subs. But if the contract and/or project documentation is ambiguous, the design professional may look back and wish that it had provided detailed design of every connection, nut and bolt itself. Read the full article to find out why.

An old Dutch row house is reimagined as a light-filled haven
dwell
It’s easy to see how Hidden House got its name. The home is set back 100 feet on one of the oldest streets in Rotterdam in the Kralingen neighborhood, tucked behind a fortress of greenery. Originally built in 1840 on the grounds of a castle that dated to the 15th century, the home was scooped up in 2016 by Erica Chladová and Robert van der Pol, founders of Rotterdam studio LMNL, who planted lush gardens and gave it an update.
