 With implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the U.S. has taken a huge step in attempting to make healthcare affordable for all U.S. citizens. The objectives are clear and well-intended. The healthcare benefits of the law are significant, but we are kidding ourselves if we really think healthcare is going to be affordable, especially for the currently uninsured.

Sleep duration, insomnia, and coronary heart disease among postmenopausal women

Long and short sleep duration are associated with increased risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, evidence is inconsistent. It was sought to identify whether self-reported sleep duration and insomnia, based on a validated questionnaire, are associated with increased incident CHD and CVD among postmenopausal women.

CMS: Healthcare reform powers fraud prevention

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, the Obama administration has recouped more than $14.9 billion in healthcare fraud recoveries, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced.
Moreover, CMS has thrown 14,663 crooked providers and suppliers out of Medicare over the past two years, compared to only 6,307 revocations two years before healthcare reform screening and review requirements took effect.

Quest, Hologic form alliance to focus on women's health
The Wall Street Journal
Hologic Inc. (HOLX) and Quest Diagnostics Inc. (DGX) entered an alliance to expand Quest's offerings of Hologic's Aptima cervical-cancer testing products, expanding the relationship between the two companies.
Under the nonexclusive agreement, initially set for five years, the companies plan to focus on opportunities to develop and expand access to diagnostic options for women's health and implement joint programs to advance women's health issues. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Cholesterol screening for women: Who is 'at risk'?

High cholesterol often precedes cardiovascular disease (CVD) and guidelines recommend cholesterol screening among at-risk women. Definitions of CVD risk vary and prevalence of dyslipidemia (abnormal total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), or non-HDL-C) among at-risk women may vary by age and definition of CVD risk.
