Radiation dose linked to cardiac risk in breast cancer patients

In the past, cardiovascular risk has been linked to the radiation dose received by breast cancer patients. Now, a new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine attempts to calculate the cardiac risk of breast cancer patients today undergoing current radiotherapy protocols.
Group releases criteria for PCOS diagnosis

Women with at least two of the three cardinal features of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) should be considered to have the disorder, according to clinical practice guidelines released by the Endocrine Society. The new guidelines endorse the Rotterdam criteria for diagnosing PCOS, which identifies excess androgen production, ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovaries as the key diagnostic features of the disorder in adult women.

The stats: Breast cancer second most common for American women

Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, according to the Office on Women's Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Every woman has a chance of getting breast cancer, with about one in eight being diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her life. This risk was about one in 11 in 1975, according to the Office on Women's Health.

Study: Link between weight gain in pregnancy and autism

University of Utah researchers trying to tease out the causes of autism spectrum disorder have discovered a relationship between a mother's weight gain during pregnancy and autism. The takeaway, however, is not that women should try to limit weight gain during pregnancy, said lead researcher Deborah Bilder.

After a median of 13.2 years' follow-up, there were 35 percent fewer endometrial cancers among women given combined estrogen and progestin vs.

Endovascular coiling should be offered to women with pelvic congestion syndrome as an effective treatment. "The technical success rate is high, pain scores were significantly improved, and most importantly, the patient satisfaction with resolution of their symptoms is very high," Dr. Axel Thors said.
