The doctor enters and pulls up the electronic medical record. The patient's history is already there. So is the CT scan. The doctor drags and drops the image, presses the "analyze" button. An actionable diagnosis appears a moment later. If artificial intelligence (AI) were to one day take over much of clinical practice, as some fear or anticipate — being potentially faster, more reliable, and generally better at certain tasks than humans — clinical decisions may no longer depend on tired eyes, imperfect risk scores, or lagging guidelines.

Many states have signed laws and regulations expanding access to healthcare provided by advanced practice registered nurses.
Hospital executives involved with attracting, hiring and retaining top talent will want to track the trend of enabling nurses to practice at the top of their license because doing so makes them more accessible to a wider array of patients.

Telemedicine isn't just for rural areas without a lot of doctors anymore.
In the last few years, urban areas all over the country have been exploring how they can connect to patients virtually to improve access to primary care and keep people from calling 911 for non-urgent problems.
In Washington, D.C., Mary's Center, a community health center, is piloting a program to provide primary care virtually to Medicaid patients who can't make it in to any of their clinics.

When Hurricane Irma hit Florida, Florida International University’s Florida Advance Surgical Transport (FIU-FAST) took action. HPV, including high-risk HPV, is significantly more prevalent in males than in females in the United States, although rates vary by age and race or ethnicity, according to recent findings. According to the CDC, HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. Mainly spread during vaginal or anal sex, HPV is preventable through vaccination. The infection usually resolves on its own but can cause health problems in some patients, including genital warts and cancer.

A dynamic learner-centered education module appeared more effective than a linear static education module for engaging nurses and improving the administration of necessary doses of venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, according to study results.
“We teach in hopes of improving patient care, but there is actually very little evidence that online professional education can have a measurable impact. Our results show that it does,” Elliott R. Haut, MD, PhD, FACS, said.

Becker's Hospital Review
In my 30-plus years of nursing experience, I’ve had the pleasure of helping patients across the continuum of care.
Disposable IV pressure bags were not available to us in the field when I was a pediatric nurse. Holding the IV bag with one hand and caring for the patient with my other hand was not an effective strategy for resuscitation. To ensure my patients received necessary fluids, I re-engineered the bags by taking tape and cinching it around the top of the IV bag like a corset. This caused a rush of fluids to stream down to the patient.

A drug developed for type 2 diabetes has "significantly reversed memory loss" in mice with Alzheimer's disease, and researchers now want to test it on humans.
The treatment is exciting for scientists because it works by protecting the brain cells attacked by Alzheimer's disease in three separate ways, rather than relying on a single approach.
